what happened to cars with diesel engines?

use to be you could get the VWs and evem Nissans with diesels but now you can't find anything unless its an american V8 OR MERCEDES V6 EITHER OR WHICH IS NOT COST EFFECTIVE?

I believe they are phasing out simply because diesel produce more carbon monoxide compared to the non-diesel engines....
Moreover, with the emphasis on environment, I think car manufacturers are going to produce more fuel-efficient and fuel-alternative engines for cars
