Glass top stove driving me nuts!

Does anyone else have a glass top stove that drives them nuts? I've lived in this house for a year and a half now, and I seriously can't stand my stove top. EVERY time I use it I have to clean it. And I'm not talking about just wiping it clean. It gets black marks on it if there is ANY moisture on the underside of my pots and pans at all. This is a white stove top. Are the black ones any better at hiding the marks? Maybe I'm doing something wrong when I'm cooking. Either way I only have about 3 more weeks to put up with it before we move, but I'm sure eventually I'm going to have to replace the stove in our new place. I don't think they make the burner style anymore, do they? Anyway, does anyone have good tips on cleaning this dumb thing? What do you like/ dislike about glass top stoves?

I love mine. I have the black and I normally wipe it off after every use. It does not require a big clean up which is one of the things I love about it. I don't miss cleaning up after spills and boil overs on the old stove at all. This one is easy to maintain and clean. It sounds like the white shows more or gets more markings on it. When you move try to get a black one!

It sounds like the black stove top is much nicer. I definitely wouldn't mind wiping up after each use. That's part of my kitchen cleaning routine anyway. Scrubbing it after each use is getting old, though!

Oh yeah, that would get old really quick. I wouldn't be in the mood for that after working all day and then coming home to get dinner fixed as soon as possible. Easy clean up is a must for me with my schedule.

Fortunately I'm a stay at home mom, so I do have time in my day to get the stove cleaned. It's just frustrating, because I always thought this stove tops were supposed to be easier to take care of.

Mine is black and I never really have problems with it. I do wipe it off after each use but I don't get any special marks or anything. MY mother in law's is white as well and so far - she's had it for 4 years, she didn't have any special problems either. I have heard, however, a few complaints from a friend that has a white as well. Maybe white is more prone to scratches, I'm not sure.

mine is black. not much of problem cleaning. I don't know about white top. I could even clean it with soap and all the dirts and grease will go away, even if I don't clean it regularly. but it also depends how often you use it and what you cook, some spills are hard to clean if you don't clean it right away.

That's the thing.... I rarely have spills. These are spots that are left just from cooking. The only thing I have noticed is that any water on the bottom of the pans leaves a terrible black mark that is hard to clean.

They make the burner style. I was at Sears about a month ago getting a new filter for my fridge & saw them - kind of in passing. Its just the glass tops are considered an upgrade. I'd like to get one of those that stay cool unless you put a pot on it. I think I'd like a glass top because of the cats, on the other hand I'd be afraid, because of them too. Sealed stove top as conpared to burned kitty paws, some choice....

That's good to know that they still make the burner style. I swear, I was really meant to be born about 50 years before I was. I am so old-fashioned in some ways! LOL I haven't seen the ones that stay cool unless you put a pot on it. I do think I've heard about them, though. That is a REALLY good idea! Oh, definitely keep that kitty safe! I haven't been unfortunate enough to put my hand down on one of the hot burners yet, but I keep fearing I will. I do like the light that says the burners are hot.

OMG, I am the opposite and absolutely love my glass top stove (mine has a black top)! I never did like the electric stoves that have the coils as they were always a b*tch to clean, not to mention there is more chance of a grease fire with this type of stove. With the glass top I just wipe away debris that may be there and I'm ready to go! Yes, they still make the coiled type. I see that you are in the US. You should be able to get this type of stove through Sears or any other store that sells appliances.

I do like that there is less of a chance of a grease fire with the glass top. Wiping away the debris is nice and easy, too. I bet I'm going to miss that part after I move. Our new house has the coil style top.

I LOVE mine! Make sure the bottoms of the pots are dry... I have a towel hanging there just for that purpose. Wipe it down when its WARM, not hot, and you'll get most of it. For the worst spots, I either set a wet sponge on it and walk away for an hour, or use a single-edged razor blade to 'encourage' it. It took me some time to get used to mine... now, I won't have anything else!

They are just so different from what we're used to... I for one do NOT miss those nasty burner pans! That was a lot of work! At first I bought the cleaner made for smooth-tops. but it leaves a chalky residue thats not easy to remove, and 'buff' isn't in my vocabulary unless its describing a good lookin' guy!LOL! To make it nice and shiny, I spray it when its completely cool with scrubbing bubbles or window cleaner, then wipe it down. With mine, I know its safe to wipe down when the light by the burner control turns off... but I DO use a big thick sponge!

I never thought about using Scrubbing Bubbles! Are you talking about the ones that are generally thought of for bathroom cleaning with the little bubble guys on the bottle? That is a great idea. I don't like the cleaner for the glass, either, and I know what you mean about buffing. Since I don't have the owner's manual for this stove (it was here when we moved in) I didn't know what I could use, so I've just used the same cleaner that the old owner was using as they left me a bottle when they moved. I love the scrubbing bubble idea and will have to try it today! Thank you.

I always think my pots are dry, but obviously I'm getting water dripped on the stove top somehow. Good idea about the towel! I do wait to long to wipe it down, too. I have to admit that I have a phobia about fire, so I'm always afraid I'm going to catch the rag on fire if I wipe down the stove top too soon. Ok, I realize I am STRANGE! LOL

glass topstove. - Hers is this one, but chromish finish.
I dont have one where i live. But where i baby sit they have one, and its got a blacktop. It is a brand new stove/oven, and i dont mind it. It cleans fairly easy and stuff. The only thing i find different then my element one is that it takes a LONG time for the "hotspot" on the glasstop to get hot. The element stove here, if i turn it to max, the water will boil within a minute. but at her house it takes almost 10 mins on max for the water to start to boil. It annoys me when i wanna cook something fast like KRAFT DINNER lol.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one who thinks that it heats slowly! I remember the first time I went to cook spagetti on this stove top. I thought it was broken because it took so long for the water to boil! LOL

I have a black stove top and they are better at hiding the marks, but you do have to clean them every day. I use a cream specially made for them. You can get it in the grocery stores like Safeways now, but before you could get them at the place you bought your stove or the department stores. I find if you have burnt marks or have not cleaned the top for a while, baking soda and a damp towel works quite well and you have to use a plastic scraper to get off the burnt stuff.

I do use the cream cleaner made for the stove tops. When we first moved in I used it every day. Then I gave up because this problem kept happening. I wonder if maybe the top was just so scratched up by the time we moved in that I never had a chance!

I always thought it would be easier to clean a glass top, but every one that has one always says they are not good.

Now, see, everyone here seems to be pretty pleased with their glass tops. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks they are not easy to clean!

Yes, I have one too and discovered that MAGIC ERASERS do miracles with black gunk. They scrub right off. Sometimes I just wipe my stove, then montly I will use that magic eraser (by Mr. Clean) and off it comes with a little elbow grease. If it's REALLY bad, I'll add baking powder to the magic eraser and scrub and it works every time and I've had the most black dried on gunk ever!

I have a black glass top stove and it is extremely easy to keep clean. Much easer than the old fashioned stove top burners. One word of caution, if you have cat's or kittens that like to jump up on the counters or appliances, the glass stove top could cause serious burns to the pads on their feet, if it is hot enough it could melt their pads off their feet. Because we have four cats we needed to cat-proof our stove. I purchased two extra large cookie sheets that I just place over the top of burners, after I am done cooking. They can get hot if the burners are not cooled off, but I don't worry as much if the cat's walk across the stove top. So, this would be the only thing I do not like about the glass top stoves, it can be dangerous for cat's, people need to be cautious when cooking with them.

I have a black one and it's not too bad to clean, but I have a SERIOUS problem that just happened this morning and I am trying to find out if it has happened to anyone else. I had a pot of boiling water on the glass top and I walked by it and thought "It should have been boiling by now, it's been on there a long time" and there were a few TINY little bubbles but not boiling. I stepped into the dining room and the pot of water exploded all over the kitchen. I was using a very nice saucepan and had it 3/4 the way full of water. I use the same pan every morning and have never had this problem before. Has anyone else had this experience?
