Mark your calenders

Did you know that gyms always have a record number of new enrollees as well as being filled with people who normally are wishy washy about going in the beginning of January? Then they empty out again as February and March roll around. Its all about making New Year's Resolutions and keeping them.
I propose this. Why don't we mark our calenders - both physical as well as those alarm thingees on our phones and computers, for two months and then six months into the year. And it would say, how are we doing with our resolutions? What steps have we taken? Have we congratulated ourselves on wins rather then focusing on our more unhealthy choices? Too often we stress the negatives more in our society. Oh I had that chocolate cake I promised myself I wouldn't. Then we call ourselves bad bad bad and say we don't have any will power. This begins the cycle - we then say forget it, I can't do this, or we feel so bad that we step off the path of the healthy direction we were going in. Instead, I think we should say, "Okay, so I had the cake, I enjoyed it (Or I didn't go to the gym today or whatever) Going forward, what healthy choices am I going to make today? " That's how I handled my clients unhealthier choices, rather then beating them over the head with it like other consultants I worked with. The majority of my clients lost weight. Save those who were there because someone else - husband, boyfriend, parent sent them in - or the ones against it from the beginning - putting it down and saying it would never work, or they could eat what they wanted or whatever.
So what do you think of my reminder/check in system? My message will ask me questions like, Okay Girl, I know you made a few unhealthy choices, what was different then normal - or how did you go back on track after that? Maybe I'll make a journal with questions like that each day. I can write my feelings under multiple choice questions - did I stay on track - how did that feel? Did I slide a bit? Tell yourself why that's okay and how I can deal with that situation differently in the future.

You've hit the idea right on the mark here Art. I just want to add a little more help for those who will be making New Year's Resolutions soon, not only for weight loss.
If you are going to make any changes in your life, when you write down your resolutions they should always be in the positive form, and list the benefits that change will afford you. This way you keep your goal and your reason in mind at all times.
Also, don't just write a list of resolutions and then put it away never to be seen again. Habits are formed in the subconscious mind, and it must be impressed repeatedly for anything to stick. When you write your resolutions, put them somewhere where you will see them everyday. This will communicate to your subconscious mind that you are serious, and the new habit will be easier to form.

I will incorporate these ideas. The last - putting them someplace you will see everyday, reminds me of putting that one thought or idea you want to carry through the day somewhere you will see first thing in the morning. Like talk to more people - or you are beautifl or whatever you want that thought to be!

The best place for that is either on the bathroom mirror, or the back of the bathroom door, or the wall across from the toilet ^_^; As embarrasing as saying that was, we all know that no matter what else you do, you will visit the bathroom in the morning. Put it somewhere at eye level, where you know you will look. This sends a message to the subconscious every time you look at it, and it will eventually come to be habit.

That's close to what I've decided to do this year, keep a journal and mark my calender to check up on myself. I resolved to not beat myself up too badly if I slipped up a bit on one of my resolutions. I've started a new exercise program, well actually it will start in earnest tomorrow, the first full "business week" of 2008, and I'm going to check off day by day how I do and how long, etc. I think it would be a great idea if we periodically reminded our myLot friends here of their resolutions and goals they've set for the new year.

How great and positive! I put a piece of paper on the fridge for ever day of the week a list of food I want to make sure I eat - yogurt, three servings of vegtables, my protein shake my cottage cheese (etc - all the healthy stuff)...as well as places to mark off eight glasses of water.
I want to lose weight - but slowly - I'm still nursing so I need to get a minimum of calories in - and my vitamins and such - he takes all my good nutrients so I need to replace them - and get a lot of protein in. I can't lose too quickly as if my fat cells get burned toxins contained in them can enter my mommy's milk.
My next resolution is to do a thorough cleansing, colon and otherwise as soon as he's weaned and taking up yoga again and Qi Gong.
I really hope you keep up on your positive resolutions - keep me posted.
