It's now been two years since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Its bouncing back, but some people are still living in FEMA trailers. A lot of progress has happened, but I believe the city will never be what it once was, being hit by a hurricane, and then forgotten by US officials. You would think the outcry from the residents and celebrities would be enough to make Capitol Hill get a move on and help out. Yet and still we are now waiting on George Bush to approve a $556 Billion bill to fund the federal Government through September 2008, $70 billion of that is earmarked to go directly to the failing efforts of the Iraq war. For more details go here:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22327723
Now how is it that the anti-war democrats can't find a way to bring our troops home, but the House found a way to give it another $70b? This is a failing effort. We have been at war for might as well say the whole eight years Bush has been in office. We STILL can't find Osama, the person who was supposed to have started it all. The small strides we have made in Iraq have crumbled, especially with the Pakistani Prime Minister being killed just recently. Information on that here:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22420073
We have money to place band-aids on this sinking ship, but we don't have any to help our own get back to a normal sense of life, even if it will never be the same.
Its funny, the House Appropriations Committee Chairman, David Obey, says this about the war, "... The only option to changing direction in Iraq is to elect more progressive voices in United States senate, and to elect a President with a different set of priorities." Couldn't have said it better myself.
But will we survive one more year of this? Can the US stand this final year of Bush? Gas prices are sky high, unemployment is up, people living in trailers designed only to house them for a few months. By the time we do get to elect a new President, will there be any US left to preside over?

you know i have been miserable with our president for the last 8 years. i was heated when he won! you know his dad has really be running this counrty for the last 8 years. the bush that is really president doesnt know nothing. so bush senior has been president for 16 years. not fair, but they will never see it.

No, Bush Senior was only in office himself one term, so he has been president for 12 years, not 16. Still unfair.

I think D.L. Hughley put it best last week on Def Comedy Jam. He was saying that a lot of people don't think America is ready for a Black President. He was like, "What are you worried for? He can't be too much worse than the one we have now!!!"

If you look back through history, our country has been in worse shape. It's just a matter of perspective. We will survive the next year and then the new president can start cleaning things up to bring the country back to the standards we're used to...but even if he/she can't, maybe we just need to adjust our way of living. Our country survived our Civil War, two world wars, the depression, the dust bowl, the gas issues in the 70's and all sorts of other things. The current situation is just another blip on the radar. We need to look at ourselves before we start pointing fingers at everyone else, we could adjust and make things good for ourselves regardless of what's going on in the world...but not too many people are willing to do that anymore it seems.

This is true. It seems that America has forgotten the ways of "One nation for all," and replaced it with "Every one for himself." Katrina wouldn't have made it as far as it has without the help and support of other concerned citizens in the nation, seeing as how Bush conveniently forgot about them during the war. Maybe if we stop relying on Capitol Hill to take care of all our problems and reach out to one another, this nation would be a lot better off.

It's horrible, but I have these same misgivings. I've wondered for a long time why someone doesn't just shoot the guy. They've shot presidents who were a whole lot better than he is. I'm not saying someone should -- I'm just wondering why no one has.
Bush is the worst president this country has ever had. He's cocky and thinks that it has to be his way or no way. He's always had the silver spoon, so he has no clue what life is like for those of us who are trying to pay the bills he amasses. It makes me sick when he vetoes bills, like insurance for little kids, because we don't have enough money. We would have if he hadn't blown it all on his personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein.
I live in Iowa, so I've been hearing campaign promises for months now. The candidates have all been touring the state. They all promise better things than what we've been having. All but McCain who's nothing but a Bush puppet. But will the country survive until one of them gets into office? That's anybody's guess.

Honestly, the question should not be whether or not we can survive another year of Bush. No, it is far from it. The question should be will the American people become involved in the politcs of every day life to ensure that the person that they have in office- is someone who will run the country correctly. The reason why it does not matter whether or not we will be able to survive another year of Bush is because he is, as politics call its, a "Lame Duck". Basically, as I am sure that you already know, this means that he is not able to push any kind of new legistlation because the Democrats have a majority in the house, as well as in the senate. Considering the fact that Bush is a Republican, and Democrats and Republicans are basically parallel to one another on the political spectrum- none of his new legislation will be passed unless there is a Rider on it. A Rider, as once again I am sure you already know, is a clause that is attached to the legislation. It is somewhat like "if we get this, then we will give you that". So saying all that to say- sure, the American people can survive another year of Bush. Its not like he will be able to influence anything in our daily lives. That is- unless your talking about foreign policy. Well, that is just my opinion on things.

This is more like a nightmare, but its reality unfortunately. We won't wake up until January 2009 when the new president is sworn into office.
