i love fishball! its a street food and many says its not safe to eat but heck, its yummy and we need some bacteria in our body once in a while! LOL i usually prefer chilly sauce or a combination of sweet and chilly. i have always thought that fishballs are eaten with sauce. but i have 2 friends who prefer to eat them without sauce. i can't imagine my fishballs without sauce. ^__^;; so what sauce do you put in your fishball?

I don't think I've ever had fish balls.I hope they are cooked because I wouldn't eat any fish raw, never had sushi.I would probably mix horse raddish, ketchup and mustard together for a sauce.Sounds good.

yup, they are cooked. fried in cooking oil actually. i've never had sushi too but it would be fun to try it at home. so i can vomit freely if i wouldn't like it. LOL

Quite intriguing. I wish I had heard of them when I was in Makati about 2 years ago. I'm always up for trying foods new to me. Hey if you can put chili sauce on them that makes it even better. Tell me more about them. ‹(°¿°)›

oh too bad jumpinjack! but since its Makati, it is understandable that you didn't encounter fish balls there. i mean, Makati is like, home for the executives and big companies so i don't think fish ball vendors would litter there. LOL if you probably were able to explore Manila, i'm sure you'll find at least one fish ball vendor in a church, schools, or just anywhere. ^__^ fish balls are surimi. surimi are processed fish "white" meat (finely grounded). they are like fish paste mixed with spices. and fish balls are surimi shaped like balls and fried in cooking oil and are usually eaten on sticks. just like the one in the picture.

Ah now I understand why I didn't come across any. They sound great. Just like you were talking about with the other responder, "like hot dogs." Except these are fish bits. Hmmmmm? Maybe it could become the next cool snack here in America. Maybe our LOSTIES should make some. lol ‹(°¿°)›

the chilly sauce is not really that hot. and you can mix it with the sweet sauce so the taste wouldn't be that chilly. ^__^

Oh yeah, fishball is indeed a nice junk food. I like sweet sauce or chili for the combination. Eating it plain is nice too.

Fishball is really an utterly yummy food for me and my husband. Just same as your friends I do like to take them without any sauce. You know there are already some tasty ingredients like onions, pepper and others mixed with the fish in the fishball and I prefer the originally taste of them, whereas my husband likes to take his fishballs with chilly sauce.

We have something like a fishball in the states. It's cooked and processed fish with a breading and it is deepfried. Fish patties or fish burgers. Instead of balls, they're flat and they're browned in oil. We have usually a choice of cocktail sauce with is basically ketchup (catsup) and horse radish sauce or tartar sauce with is basically mayonnaise and chopped pickles for a sauce. I like either one. When I eat Asian food, I like sweet and sour sauces or orange sauce. Chili sauce has never been something I liked because it seemed sour to me, but our sauce called chili sauce may be different than yours over there. This has been fun to learn more about a food from somewhere else. Thanks and take care

surimi are usually made of tuna fishes. and only their "white" meat are used and not the red part because it spoils faster than the white meat. other fishes are okay too as long as they have good quality white meat. ^__^ there are available surimi in the market although i don't know if they are available there. but if you would really try it i suggest you look for a recipe in the net. ^__^

Now im very interested!!!!We do not have this kind of fish here, but i think it can work with haddock or something of similar taste. If i mince it up in a blender, add some spices, then form a ball and put in batter,im sure i can at least try to come close to it,haha.I will try because it sounds very good and we all enjoy eating fish and this is a totally different way than the normal for us. Peanutjar:):)

I like it dipped in sweet sauce or vinegar with a pinch of pepper and lots of onions. I can't tolerate hot sauce, so that is a no no for me. I cant imagine it without sauce. The taste can be a bit boring. If we really want to binge on it, I buy in the supermarket frozen fish balls then we just prepare one in our home. At least we know that it is safe to eat.

Oh I never thought of that. But you got a good point. Maybe I was thing of those being sold where they are exposed to pollutants. By the way, thank you for commenting back even if this discussion is already in the archive.

I buy fishballs from our local supermarket I avoid street vendors because I am afraid of catching a disease. I like eating fish balls dipped in a sauce made up of vinegar, "siling labuyo" (a local pepper), chopped onions and a dash of salt.

When I eat out, the fish balls I have often go with chilly and sweet sauce. Sometimes, those who do sell them have sauces with varieties Its really nice while its still hot and you dunk it into hot sauce.. man, thinking about it alredy makes my mouth water.. I might try to eat some when I'm out later or not if no cart comes by

I am quite certain that you're a Filipino like me. And same as you, I also love eating fishballs. But I don't get to enjoy this streetfood as much as I like and as often as I used to. About six to eight years ago when I was still unmarried, I had the chance to buy fishballs on the street and eat them with the sauce made available by the vendor with a cart. And about the sauce, I have tasted both the spicy and sweet sauces but I often prefer taking the sweet sauce. Like you, I also can't imagine eating fishballs without any sauce. I feel that fishballs would be tasteless and I wouldn't be able to appreciate it. I don't know if you knew it but I've heard some people say that fishballs are made from stale fish. Maybe this is the reason why they say that these are not safe to consume. And by the sound of stale fish, I knew that this isn't good. But this news didn't keep me from eating fishballs then. My only reason is that, "if I don't feel anything weird going on in my stomach because of eating this streetfood, I wouldn't be prevented from buying and eating such." At present, I'm already married with one daughter for a child but street vendors selling these foods seem to have dwindled so our child haven't tasted these street foods until now.

Yes! I'm a Filipina and one that can enjoy native dishes and "only in the Philippines" food. Maybe in your place fishballs aren't that popular because I still see a lot of vendors here, there, and everywhere. lol They are probably mostly seen in school because they are affordable and students can afford them.

Hi. secretbear. This is my first time ever seeing what fish ball looks like. It looks like a glazed donut that has sweet icing on it. I would like to try it, only if it is just cooked fish that is balled up. Anything other than that, I think that I may not want to eat.

Hi cream! Yes, it is fish but it is not actually cooked. The fish meat is grounded and minced and mixed with spices, flour and binder and then it is shaped into balls. Afterwards, it is fried in cooking oil.
