How Important are Emotional Intelligence Skills to You?

How important is the use of emotional intelligence in your work as a manager? Have you read the E.I. books and are familiar with the concepts? The reason I ask is that I am currently reading "The New Leaders" by Dan Goleman and although I find it interesting, I do have reservations being all touchy feely.
