Don't understand what you mean by blogs really work... Some blogs are successful while most are not.. It depends ultimately on what one is blogging about and whether it is interested to its readers...

To get referrals? I think your blog must be very attractive, have good content and have good traffic and readership... I would say its not worth to promote your referrals on blogs...

a blog can have various functions. in my blog, i do blog for sharing my research and some personal stuff too. i don't earn from my blog. some people say that i should earn from it because i get some traffic on my blog.
