my mother called this evening, she told me she had been out with a friend who needed to stop off to the store to buy her husband some chew. $29 for 5 tins.... her friend lamented on what a gross/dirty habit it was but that at 75 years old she did not think she was going to break her husband of it any time soon.
I relayed to mom that I had recently read some literature on the use of chew and how it destroys the tissues in the mouth and leads to cancers of the mouth etc.
She said that her grandfather chewed and died well into his 80s and never had any cancers, and found it odd that today it causes it (not that she disbelieves that cancer is an effect, but why now and not then?).
I got to thinking maybe it is not the tobacco leaves in and of itself that causes so much cancer but the pesticides that are used in their production.
then I got to thinking - why would they even need to use pesticides on tobacco when it is a natural insecticide to begin with.
though I do still wonder if it is not the pesticides that are the true culprit that should come with the warning label.
sigh.

I think there is a genetic link and some people may have a natural predisposition to get things like cancer, not to mention, I think that now we are exposed to more carcinogenics then every before and this might result in a break down of the immune system.
Why do some children get cancer and others don't, we don't know.
Why he didn't get cancer ..we don't know, he was lucky!

What I find most discusting about this discussion is that Chew is still around for people to use. I saw this a couple of times when I was a child and that was many many moons ago. I remember thinking when I was a child how can anyone spend there time chewing this most discusting cud. I don't' know why I called it cud maybe I heard my mother call it that or something. I remember being so grossed out, I remember thinking it was one thing for sure i would never do when I got older. I dont' think I have ever seen anyone do that since I was about 8 years old possibly younger. So I am so surprised to read that someone is still using this stuff. Thought maybe it was only in the old movies.
