sooo im just realllllly curious as to how the sport americans call football got its name football.. soccer which i refer to as football makes sense to me.. but americans got this game they play with like 40+ guys on a team together and only one of them is there to kick the ball and they decide (even though a sport already exists with the name) to call this sport football.. id really love to know who and how one would come to the conclusion that football was a good name for this sport

American football evolved from football or "soccer" as we call it in the USA, in the mid-1800's. Technically the football you are familiar with is or was known as "Association Football". American Football started out very similar to soccer but evolved over the year into what it is today. Know one really knows who invented American Football but it is said that two soccer teams were playing each other and one of the goalies, or keepers as most call them, picked up the soccer ball and ran with it down the field while the opposing team tried to tackle him to the ground. He ran it into the goal and they tallied the point. It seems more like rugby now but it used to be more like soccer with not as much contact. I hope I have been of some help.

I posted a question like this some time ago as I was greatly puzzled as to why they call it football when the ball is mostly carried like in rugby..I got no satisfactory replies... good luck with this one :-)
