Job Security

I am a case of the fact that there is no job security in America. I have been disillusioned by "The American Dream" idea. I work hard and have done many things. I have my own business, but it takes money to make money. I work as an independent contractor for someone else to pay for life's necessities as well as my advertising and capital. I was told by someone in the hiring department of the job I have now that I could be terminated at "any" time. That did not sit well with me and motivated me to become a business owner. Do you feel secure at your job? Should there be job security? How do we really deal with this?

I am very fortunate that I love what I do and work for a great person. Yeah, my job is in jeopardy sometimes - like last month - but as a CPA I am pretty marketable (especially now before tax season). I really don't think I have a lot to worry about though, our plans are for me to become a partner, then eventually purchase the firm when my boss retires. I also have a home-business that would keep us going if anything were to happen. Sometimes my home-business income seems like it's more reliable than anything else, but that too ultimately depends on factors out of my control. Do your best, be happy with it and others most likely will be also!

Thank you for your response Reinydawn. Yes you are quite marketable at this time of the year. I am lucky in that I like what I do and I do it for someone else as well as myself which gives me options and much experience. And yes, I do believe that the happiness with what I am doing will prove contagious to others involved. Take Care and Happy New Year.

Job security? Yeah, that's only in the movies! Anyone is lucky to be at the same job for 10 years these days! No more 40 year retirees! EMployers these days don't particularily care if they get qualified help and work to keep it. It is not in WHAT you know, or WHO you know... it is HOW MUCH you will work for. Most employers would rather take an unqualified person and pay a low salary and deal (or should I say make other employees deal) with the training of the person for how ever long, than to hire a qualified person that can jump in and take the job and run but request a higher salary.

Thank you for your response coffeebreak, There will neeed to be more regulations on businesses and industries to ensure they are not decreasing earning potential and over outsourcing. I cannot see any other way. Especially with the direction that things are going. Take Care and Happy New Year.

I think job security has long become a thing of the past and not only here in the US. We live in a fast paced world and if you don't produce results quickly, chances are you will be replaced. I work for in a job where I was placed by a temp agency and know that I could get the call at any time that I'm no longer needed, but that's to be expected as a temp. Congrats on becoming a business owner, it's pretty much the only way left to control your own career destiny.

You can thank gov't on no job security. The big corporations are buying off the gov't. Or should say the gov't want stand up to big business. Solution is, stop doing business with big companies and do business with the new start ups that are competiting with companies like at&t, verizon, cingular, ebay etc... Stop buying from companies that buy cheap from china so companies can charge full price here in america. Big companies actually turned there back on the americans and cost thousands of jobs and then the americans still buy from the companies that took there job away. Go figure. Forget job security. I believe it's called selling out america.
