Are you arrogant?

I think that all people are arrogant... because they think that their life is more important than nature. Look at it this way... If you screw up with nature... the penalty is no water. Forget about dying of thirst... That won't happen because we have ways of recycling water. But no water means no food... No cereals, no vegetables, no meat... all of them requires water which cannot be provided artificially through recycling. How important are you? When you look at an ant nest... how important are they to you? You step on them... Right? When nature look at us... we are ants... When nature unleash its fury... thousand of us die... It's not God... it's nature... because nature is our God. When you screw up with nature... you screw up with God. So... how arrogant are you?

I will openly admit that I am arrogant. If I do not admit that I am arrogant, then I will be ignorant. If I do not admit my ignorance, then I will be arrogant. And- well, I would rather be arrogant then ignorant. I am aware of how humans treat other living things. And the fact of the matter is, every human does it- no matter how openly they will tell you that they dont. The people who are vegetarians are arrogant as well. Nature is very important in the role that it plays in our every day lives. I will agree with that. We are not the most important thing that the planet has to offer- that is a fact as well. Another fact is that the Earth was doing just fine before humans stepped on into the planet, and it will be fine long after we are gone.

Hi Aussies, A very good post. I agree that we are all arrogant in this sense. Sometimes we think that we are important, but we've only been here a few million years, which is nothing when you consider the age of the earth. I like your example of the ant nest, I've often thought of it myself. Blessings.

In answer to your question Aussie, "How arrogant are you?" I would like to be able to say that I consider myself very "unarrogant" and am quite proud of it. Arrogant people are not in my circle of friends, and I would not deal with them unless I had to. The water situation and lack of rains here in Aussie land over the last so many years has made a majority of people really think how bad the situation has become and what the result could be. But there are those that are ignorant to the fact and they are the ones who will be the first to whinge if our water supply does diminish to a level where lack of water and its daily use will not be possible. I dread to think of this! I am a lover of nature and am fortunate to live in an area where I can appreciate it and get the enjoyment of seeing all the new baby birds feasting in our backyard with their "parents" it is such a peaceful time for me to watch this as they are such little creatures in a world of such unhappiness.

Arrogant enough to ask the question... But in relation to the question... not arrogant at all. I don't consider my life of any importance in the big picture of the Universe or planet Earth. The point of the question is to put a stop to this ridiculous notion that "life is precious... and we need to survive at all costs... even if it means destroying the planet which allows us to survive."

I'd say I'm half arrogant. I am concerned about issues that would affect me...like water, all the junk thrown away that cannot be recycled and stuff like that. I try to do my share and try to do the right thing. I agree it's a very small bit and I also get teased for it. But I don't care. But there are things that I don't really notice too. Like the ant's nest...I would purposely go and stamp on one. But sometimes I would if I hadn't noticed it because I was deep in thought about something else. I agree that most people don't think of how their actions are going to affect them or they think that it's a long way away and so they wouldn't be alive to even know about it. I don't know what can be done about it either. Educating people isn't helping...no one cares. So, what can be done?

You are right... nothing can be done as long as no ones care. They will start caring when water and food gets in short supply. By then... it will be too late.

You said "It's not God... it's nature... because nature is our God. Looking at your statement, it means that you consider yourself as God, do you? Because you also said that "When you screw up with nature...you screw up with God" It means that if you don't screw up with nature, nothing will happen. So, nature will only act (or screw up) if YOU do things on it. In other words, you are god. It sounds to me that you are also arrogant. LOL.

If you wish to call it arrogance, I suppose I am one of the most arrogant people out there. Nature is here and we are always out to conquer it. As we've become more and more civilized, we've gained more and more control of nature, re-directing water, re-claiming land from the ocean, monitoring storms and preparing shelter against the forces of nature. I can't imagine screwing up drastically enough to be out of water, I like to think we are intelligent enough to solve most of our problems. Also, I don't like the analogy of humans to ants. We can consciously choose to step on ants, and nature can't consciously choose to come and destroy us.

You are arrogant indeed in thinking that you can conquer nature. If you try to control or change nature... it will comeback and kick you in the a.se in a big way. We already see that happening in all sorts of ways. There are already many countries around the world which are short of water in summer.

I agree that there must come a stop to this insanity; there will be a penalty if we keep treating nature like this. In reply to your response; I guess if you put it like that we are indeed all arrogant. I do not think it can be totally outruled due to the capitalism and the cities we built; there will be violence and lots of gasses and stuff living this way and it will be hard to cut down on it if no one cares enough to leave the car home for a change (for example). I try to make an effort by using the railroad when I need to go places I can't get by foot (unfortunatly I have a balance disorder and can't ride a bike, that would be even better), don't take too long showers, etc. Can one person make a difference? Maybe not, but we have to start somewhere :)

I am arrogant to a certain point because I do make an effort to help the environment. I am a veggie, so the amount of methane gas from the animals has nothing to do with me. I recycle when I can and I live in a small flat so my ommissions are not as big as those who live in big houses. We are all ants on this planet, except some are bigger ants than others, but we all need to work together and go back to nature for some things to right themselves...she says as she writes on a computer!!

But how much is arrogance and how much is simply survival? And where do you draw the line? If the ants are invading your kitchen, do you just leave them there? Do you die of thirst cause you don't want to be arrogant and drink from the pond? Or do you survive and drink only what you need?
