I know they are meant to be nasty (Shrek is a notable exception), but I've got no idea what they really are. What's the definition of an ogre and where do they come from?

An ogre is a mythical creature like Shrek- it really does look like Shrek only 10 times scarier. here's a definition: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ogre and Here is a picture: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2798884096/tt0923824 They are basically monsters who eat people.

Ogre to me is what i know is gaint, monster. He is absolutly an exception to his personality traits. I loved him so much in the first part of Shrek. and as far as where have they come from, even i dont have any idea. But i am totally in love with this character.

Ogres in fairy tales are big , green and ugly monsters who feed on human beings (above all children) or kidnap princess to make them their spouses. Maybe there's also an ogre race in Dungeon &Dragons game, if you are searching for a specific description you can read a D&D manual
