last night my 18 year old came to me and asked if I would cut his hair in the morning, I was thrilled with his request and assured him I would. His hair has gotten pretty long (for my tastes) and he always wore it in that messy tossle that is so common these days. well, a few moments later he announced he was going to take his shower - and he was taking an awful long time. Imagine my surprise when he came out completely bald!!! he could not wait, I suppose, he got it into his head (pun intended) and found himself compelled to cutting off his hair. not just a short cut but all the way off! what a shocker, especially this time of year - brrrr. I announced my surprise that he liked his hair so long that he would choose this - he laughed and said "I am an extremist, Mom" I must say he has a handsome head, though. LOL.

I think that is really cool! My #1 son is a police officer and also in the National Guard, currently active duty military, so he keeps his hair quite short but has never had it all the way shaved. #2 son is a Marine, so you can guess how his hair has looked, high and tight, but he's been home on leave for the last three weeks, had already let the top of his hair grow about as long as the Marines allow it, and now hasn't had a shave or a haircut since his leave started. He's looking kind of shaggy, but it's been fun for him to let it grow. He's going to get a haircut later this week and shave so we can go to dinner with him in his dress uniform before he goes back to work. Since I'm so used to my boys having very short hair, I really do like it and I think I'd like it even if they shaved their heads, though I have to agree that this time of year might not be the best time to try it. I hope your son has a nice, warm hat on hand!

52cents thank you for raising up honorable sons, willing to serve this country. both my father and my husband were career military. when my husband retired he absolutely refused to shave his face - he was so scraggly. It has been almost 10 years now and he is still lazy about taking a razor to his face, but will do so now and again. Guess it is a good thing we moved to hill country - he fits right in to the hillbilly stereotype. :)

I will pass along your thanks to my sons, and thank you to your husband and father for their service as well. That's funny about your husband and shaving. My youngest will be a civilian again in a few months and will be going to college, so I guess it'll be okay for him to get and stay scraggly for awhile. We'll see what he does. His appearance has always been very important to him so my husband and I are rather amused by the whiskers and the scraggly haircut. Like your son's bald head, I can certainly live with it and if that's the worst thing he does, it doesn't bother me one bit!

Kids will be kids. My oldest boy thought that it would be cool to dye part of his hard blond while leaving the rest of it black which is his natural color. He then asked me if it was okay for him to do this. I laughed and told him yes because I had thought of doing this myself when I was his age. He then begged me to do this to my hair also. I told him that i would just to see what it is like. A few hours later, he looked great with the tips of his hair blond and I looked familiarly simular to a skunk. The good news for him was that he didn't like it so he just cut the tips of his hair off. The bad news for me was that the lady who did my hair, bleached it instead of dying it like I had asked and when I tried to dye back over it, it wouldn't take. I walked around forever like this and you can still see some of the blond in my hair. Word of advice, don't try to do what you thought was once cool when you were fifteen.

lol! well i think that i would be shocked too! but what can you do eh!? Kids will be kids, at least he didnt'shave the cat or the dog. Or his legs or something silly like that lol. I had a boyfriend once that did that to me. We were all drinking and he just came out of the bathroom with his head completely shaved after he had been in there a good long time. We were all making fun that he was probably in there being.. one with his self or something lol. We were all pretty shocked when he came out bald. I didnt like it! but I had no choice but to live with it i guess. Although i did have to make him FIX THE SINK, all this hair was clogging it. THAT made me mad!

LOL my step son decided to follow after my little fun with a very temporary and barely noticeable small purple stripe in my hair....tonight he took off his hat and he has a few small blonde stripes amongst his newly purple hair! Only he has super light blonde hair and it is a lighter purple than what mine was so his are almost pink. I really had a hard time not laughing or staring at him funny but as you've probably figured out, they do so many strange things we learn to keep a straight face...most of the time.

The word extremist always makes me a little nervous for some reason. I am so happy we are only talking about hair!

being from the 70's, I really love the longer hair guys altho some guys (not many) do look great bald. Your son sounds like a really cool kid that does just what he wants disregarding the opinions of others.

Hello. Don't worry, people tend to be extremist at that age. I was a "metal head" walking around in black shirts, with black wristlets and long hair, with a "cool" look in my face. Now I have just the long hair left, but I still think, if I have to cut it, I could cut all of it too, because I just don't like short hair. Maybe a total baldness could be better.
