It is time to plan our vacation for 2008. In 2007 we went to Grand Cayman and it was a tropical paradise. My soon to be sister in law is in search of the worlds best snorkeling location, and I am looking for a place that isn't infested with sharks. Please no one suggest Hawaii. We are trying to keep it around $5000.00 USD for the flight, stay, hotel, and car rental. And there is no way to do that with Hawaii as the destination.

I would have said the Cayman Islands it is beautiful there. Mexico can be pretty good I hear on the Caribbean side. Also, I went to St. John which is across the water from St. Thomas and that was beautiful and untouched and not shark infested and the prices are pretty good. St. John is quiet too! Love it. Hope I helped a bit.

I was going to say Tahiti but it's outrageously expensive- :( I have always wanted to go there.

I really love snorkeling. I first snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef. Since then I have also done snorkeling in French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Samoa, the Seychelles and Belize. I have snorkeled with black tipped sharks, nurse sharks, a manta ray, sting rays and many lovely colorful fish.
I think that Belize might be a nice destination for you to choose. You could stay on charming Caye Caulker. There are some superb snorkeling trips from there. The coral is stunning and I saw such a variety of marine life. You could easily walk round the island. You would just pay for a flight to Belize City, a boat ride to Caye Caulker, accommodation and food. I just saw small sharks there not the huge ones I have heard about in Hawaii.

My soon to be sister in law has suggested Belize. Thank you so much for your input. This is the worst time of the year for me trying to come up with a destination. I will seriously look into Belize.

The best place id suggest would have to be aruba. If your budget is 5000 then you can easily get an all expense paid trip with additional costs for snorkeling and things of that sort. These minor things dont add up to too much and they even provide lessons to beginners. Aruba is quite a beautiful place.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into it. :) How many times have you been there, and is there any particular place or activity you would recommend?
