All my friends refer to it as "depression in a box." I absolutely love this movie. It's so poignant and tragic. I cry every time I watch it. It's a perfect movie to show that the Japanese people suffered just as much as those of every other country. The war was created by the states of every country, not the people. I think this is one of the main messages of the movie, along with loss and the problems that pride create. Seita killed Setsuko through his own pride. And the Japanese are a very proud people. If you liked it then I recommend Bare Foot Gen (though it is quite graphic at times). This one is more about the H-Bombs that were dropped. However it is more uplifting, showing that the Japanese people went through hardships but they grew stronger and can get past the suffering of those terrible years.

Its a great movie that captured one among many tragic events that war can do to people. How they coped and struggled with it as well.

It's an extremly beautiful movie that really puts wars into the perspective of the real victims. My boyfriend still hasn't seen all of it, he couldn't watch more closer to the end... I love it deeply, and really should watch it again sometime soon.

it was a dense and realistic movie to what was actually happening in those times, they did a great job in animating and illustrating the written story.

his move was based on a novel by some japanese writer (don't remember the name) and t was semi-biographical. I remember that I was ery touched by the movie and my mother who's only seen last 10 minutes of it cried a lot:P Well, I don'r cry so easily but definetly that was a great (yet so sad) film to watch.

well it is a very nice and very sad story. I remember when I watched it, I cried a lot and after I feel really sad and depressed. I'm soo sad to what happens to the characters esp. to setsuko. I am also feel sad to what happen to their mother. It is a very nice story of Miyasaki sensei. Recently, I discovered that there is a Jdorama of this anime. I am so curious to watch it and to see if it also good as the anime.
