digital broadcasting. Beginning Feb. 18, 2009, anyone who does not own a digital set and still gets their programming via over-the-air antennas will no longer receive a picture. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you need a coupon? Or will you just purchase a new tv?

I think it is a good idea, although I haven't figured out if I need a convertor box or not. I have regular cable, which I assume will switch over to digital cable for everyone in '09 (and probably charge me more for that, that is what I could really use the subsidy for). But I know that at least one of my TVs is not digital-ready, so it won't be able to process a digital signal regardless of how I recieve it, right? But, it sounds like the vouchers are just for antenna users, so I'm not sure what we will end up having to do.

While I generally don't approve of government subsidy programs, this one might be necessary. The government is mandating the change and new TVs are too expensive for some. The cost of the box is too expensive for lower income people, as well. An income restriction might be necessary, but I don't see people who can afford one really needing one. If you have digital cable or satellite, you won't need the converter. Only those still using an antenna, 1 in 5 according to reports, will need one.
