Who else has a food dehydrator? What do you use it for?

I have a food dehydrator and I use it to dry herbs, make beef jerky and make fruit roll ups for the kids. What do you use yours for? Do you have a recipe for food dehydrators to share?

I have one, which sad to say, has been more on the shelf than in use and that is such a shame because I truly love it and even more so the wonderful healthy snacks one can make to much at a fraction of the cost of snack food. The biggest plus is being able to control what ingredients go into the snacks, such as using healthier additives--sea salt or real salt instead of the processed stuff that has aluminum and sugar added, and low-glycemic natural sweeteners. So far I have made candied ginger slices, dried apple chips, and several kinds of beef jerky. Although I do not have my ginger recipe handy, this one is close and although it can be made without a real dehydrator, it is much easier with one: http://www.ochef.com/829.htm

Wow, did you make the candied ginger? I totally forgot to mention that I like to roll mine in xylitol (birch sugar) instead of real sugar. Xylitol is a natural low glycemic sugard that is said to prevent tooth decay in children. I use regular table sugar to candy the ginger, and just put the healthier stuff on afterwards. So glad your family liked it. It is a lot of work, but I don'[t like to pay $400 a pound for the deliciously addictive stuff.

I used sugar in the raw. I'm alergic to processed sugar. My family loved it!

I have one, but I don't use it too often. I have used it to dry herbs, make banana chips, and apple chips. Care to share with me how you make your beef jerky? I would love to try to make it. I love beef jerky, but it is so expensive.

I use the recipes at http://www.recipezaar.com/recipes/ and change them up a bit so that they are more spicy. You will get the hang of it. Buy the cheapest roast you can find to make the jerky. I buy my roast at Sam's wholesale for 2.23 a pound and it turns out great!

I don't have one but I know someone who does. I think he uses his to make beef jerky and dried fruit and stuff like that. I don't have any recipes to share though since I don't have a dehydrator.

I had one for the longest time and might get another one sometime. I used mine for making beef jerky and couldn't make it fast enough for everyone. As fast as it came out it was still gone within the day. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I only use mine for drying fruit. I love the bananas the most and could live off them if they weren't so fattening. But it is better than eating candy. I got my food dehydrator for christmas about 3 years ago and I use it often. When I got it my hubby said another gadget to sit on the counter and not get used. But I showed him he was wrong. I use it a lot.

I love my dehydrator! I have dehydrated banana chips, apples, and other fruits, along with brocolli, carrots, onions and herbs to be used in a soup mix. Beef and deer jerky are a bit more difficult for me, but I hope to try again this winter. Has anyone ever tried wild turkey jerky? With the rising cost of food, I think my dehydrator will be working overtime with whatever harvest I get from my new garden at the end of season. Might have to take a look on eBay from some extra drying racks.
