I'm leaving next week to go to California, and its my first time going away from home without my family. I just wanted to know can I keep my phone on when I'm in a plane?

no you cannot use your phone in the plane... it messes with the mechaincs of it.. well its been known to... but they should tell you that you cant have the phone on when you get on the place.. make sure when going through security you are able to turn the phone on and off or you will have to check it in your under baggage (chance for smashed phone) good luck and happy flying....

You are not suppose to. They have a list of electronics you can use in flight, and a cell phone isnt one of them. However I keep mine on anyways. and turn the ringer off. Nobody checks to make sure all cell phones are off, and ive never got caught or been in trouble for keeping my on. Hope this helps!!!!

Short answer: no. Long answer: you cannot leave your phone on so it is able to send/receive calls. Newer phones out there have what is called airplane mode that does not allow one to send/receive calls/internet etc... but does allow them to work (if you have a Blackberry or Palm) or play games etc.... "Electronics on Board The FCC and FAA ban cell phones for airborne use because its signals could interfere with critical aircraft instruments. Radios and televisions are also prohibited. Laptops and other personal electronic devices (PEDs) such as hand-held computer games and tape or CD players are also restricted to use above 10,000 feet owing to concerns they could interfere with aircraft instrumentation." Source: faa.gov Studies have shown there is no interference with aircraft and there has not been one study that shows that it does but the ban is still in effect.

All airlines that I have flown on have not allowed mobile phones to be on during a flight somewhere. However the phone that I have recently bought has a 'flight mode' on it. So perhaps in the future I might be allowed to use it on a plane that is flying in the air. I hope that you have a pleasant flight and a lovely time seeing your parents.
