Metallica is the 7th biggest selling act in American History. They're a household name. So my question to you, does Metallica have the biggest fan base out of any other music related topic? Personally they are my favorite band and my favorite songs are "Fade to Black", "Whiskey in the Jar", "No Leaf Clover", "The Unforgiven", and "Wherever I May Roam". No other band sounds quite like them, the ability of James Hetfield to hit the hard grunge like sounding notes, and then the soft notes that harmonize through a stadium. Metallica in my eyes should have the biggest fanbase ever. What's your take on things?

I know I still like them. I was just arguing with a relative at Christmas dinner about seeing them in concert. I saw them in 1983-84, not sure exactly, but my inlaw was saying they weren't even a band until the 90's !! Which is incorrect because Cliff was killed in 1986, so I asked him to explain that, and he just said I was a **$&&*&%%$!!! and walked away. They definately have a unique sound. I just wonder what bands around now would have the same longevity.

I'm not sure about the biggest fanbase of any band but I'm certain that they're quite close. They're easily the most well known and recognized metal band even over a band like Black Sabbath who started it all which just shows Metallica does have a large fanbase because of how well known they are. Hetfield does have a unique voice, because unlike other thrash singers he was able to sing well on both heavy and lighter songs.
