i have been on cruches several times.. and you never will get used to them when the irrate your armpit as you have said.. you probably have padding on them... let me tell you thats not enough... i actually have my own pair as i had to buy my... we also had a sheep skin/fur tiny blanket that i made into for the arms... also you could try taking a towel and wrapping it around the armpit part... another thing is that it might be too high.. so it might have to go down a knotch... so look into that as well.. but put something where the armpit padding is and you will notice a difference.. good luck and have a fast recovery... (i would give you my crutches if i could)

yeah i am around 5 feet 5 inches tall and i had them on the setting for 5'6 then when i went to the doctor they said it looked like i was bent over so they raised them to the 5'8 position and that when my armpit started to hurt. so i think i will move it back down to the 5'6 setting.

my surgeon told me after i had my knee surgury that he wanted it set 1 below my height.. when using the crutches you want them to rest under the armpit and not dug into the armpit... thats what the irration comes from...

I am one of the lucky ones who can say I have never broken a bone in my body... so no I have not needed to use crutches before, I bet though that they are very uncomfortable to use... hope you get better soon and dont need them for long.

I've only had to use crutches once in my life for about 5 or 6 weeks while the "broken" bones in one of my feet healed. I had pulled the ligaments, etc. so hard that three pieces of bone were pulled off in one foot. That was actually better than if the ligaments had been pulled away from the bone which would have required surgery instead of just a cast. I didn't like using crutches but had no real problems with them. I have a lot of upper body strength and was able to take a lot of the weight on the hand holds and not all in the armpits which probably helped a lot.
