many pinoys/pinays go abroad to earn dollars. now that the dollar is on a down trend and the peso is going strong, do you think it will make pinoys/pinays to think twice of going abroad to work? what is your say?

I think it's not the worth of the dollar that matters but the lack of jobs here in the Philippines. In fact, there are more ofws outside the US than actually in the US and before, a nurse goes to Saudi as maid because the salary of a maid is higher than the salary of a nurse here in the Philippines. But there are many of those who are capable who do no longer go abroad but work in a call center.

most ofws are paid in dollars? anyway, it is pitiful to know that a professional teacher in the philippines is willing to work as a househelp in a foreign country. in the porcess, leaving her children while taking care of other children.

i agree with you. its the lack of job opportunities here in the Philippines, and guys look. i smell something fishy is going on regarding Peso and Dollar value right now, currently on the news they said that the value of Peso is getting stronger... but should we think why, there are so many jobless people here in the Philippines, the economy is not getting any better, so how come things like this are happening..

i don't think so.. they didn't stop going to iraq, kuwait, lebanon, etc. when those countries were involved in wars. i don't think the devaluation of dollar could stop them from going either..

it is a pity that some of our kababayan have to go to those dangerous countries even if going there is banned by the government. i think whatever happens to the exchange rate, millions of filipinos will still prefer to go abroad to earn because there is not much work that pays living wage in the country.

exactly. but i also think the hiring system here is also a factor. you know, upper-class school graduates always get the better positions. if you're not from this or that school, then come back later. it sucks coz business politics still kick in. and our fellowmen from lower-class schools who, i bet most of them, are a hell lot better than those from upper-class schools don't even get the chance to prove themselves. it truly is annoying that the government doesn't really seem to care. they keep focusing on a few industries where they can earn a lot, and barely giving a glimpse on other industries where a lot of our countrymen are good at.

i could sympathize with your point. but i think, many graduates from other schools have also proven their worth - that they could be at par with those old schools. your view on our politics made me not say more on. you said it better. i hate politicians who are selfish and greedy of power. do you know that a son of GMA is a representative of a district in bicol where they did not grow up? how could he represent that district? politics makes me sick at times.

Well you still have to look for the opportunities available here. There seems to be lesser event thought the dollar got weakened recently. Our economy is still weak despite that. Our political system is still on shaky grounds and there are a lot more things that an average pinoy or pinay would love to work abroad. Besides weak dollar is just a phase in every currency it will take back its position in the coming days for sure. This thing may not last long.

yeah, i think it is more than the devaluation of the dollar that will stop filipinos from working abroad. less domestic opportunities and shaky political situation do not help encourage pinoys and pinays to stay in the country.

I don't think that such indication will stop Filipinos from going abroad. Even if our currency is becoming stronger, it doesn't necessarily mean that the quality of life also changes. It may have an effect but its effect is not showing such big impact. Still, many of us are still struggling as the prices of commodities continue to rise.

Hi mensab, i dont think weak dollar can stop pinoys/pinays to go abroad. even though the peso si going strong the price of the product still expensive and not even roll back the price. and its hard to get good job here with a nice salary. SAlary here in the Philippines cannot support your daily needs. ^_^

Also add into it the political stability too. It is one major factor that makes out country move so slowly.

i think it will take more than the weakening of the dollar to stop pinoys/pinays from going abroad to work. it is parallel with the economic conditions of the country like wage, job opportunities and prices of goods.

earning abroad is still different from earning in the Philippines. just consider the tax that pinoys pay on their salary, all the deductions, etc.. And to think that we pay that much just for the taxes??? and example is if you earn 10,000 pesos, your tax is almost 2,000!!! This is earn not just for 1 day! it seems like we are just working for them. Look at Singapore, the country is nice and clean. yet they don't charge too much on taxes. All I can say is Philippines will never grow as long as politicians are corrupt. That's why a lot of people go abroad not just to work but sometimes to migrate.

your view is totally acceptable and shared by many kababayan. we could not see where our taxes go. we could only conclude that politicians are pocketing those money. but i see hope in our country. i hope you do too.

I do! well, looking at the peso-dollar exchange rate(hoping that it is not being controled by our government), I can see hope and hopefully whoever is the next president on 2010, he/she will do the same, I mean, for the best of everyone and not for the interest only of those that "can afford". Also, we can get rid of the mind set "if you want to get rich, be a politician". Ü
