Have you considered being a foster home? Rescues can only take in as many cats as they have room for and foster homes are limited. Or volunteer to a rescue when they need people to run cats to the vets, etc. Also, I would contact local rescues directly and ask if they have room for just one (and if a few have room for just one, then it makes a difference. Unfortunately, it is not really news - as most county shelters euthanize when there is no room, but you can make a difference with just a tiny bit of work. I have partnered up with a shelter and contact rescues for the dogs there and it has helped. I have a rescue blog here: http://houndsgood.com ANother idea is to post to your local craigslist and ask other people in the community to adopt. there is still time - all is not lost yet.

sassy was adopted?YAY!! that is wonderful news:) HG-i pretty much am a foster home. many of my cats came from landlords changing their minds on neighbors and banning pets after the people moved in with them (another source of homelessness). all the residents of the building next door to me came to me with their cats one year, pleading with tears in their eyes, and i not only took them,i gave that landlord a piece of my mind. i doubt he cared, but he got it anyway.

I sure wish I could be a "foster" care person for pets...I live in an apt though and am only allowed my two cats...and yes, they are fixed. Unfortunately most pet rescuers can't even take in one more pet...most foster rescuers might be dealing with up to 30 pets already sometimes more.

Just took a quick peak at your blog...I did my share in helping someone here at MyLot...she, her grown daughter and son in law can no longer live where they are and are to move soon to the son in laws family's home---and no cat is allowed. This broke the MyLotter's heart as she had really bonded with Sassy the kitten...Since she knew I had "experience" with pet rescuers...(very long story there)..she asked for my help-- I even did an outreach to here if anyone of the MyLot community could help...can see the Part II of the discussion (which has a part I link) http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1344136.aspx Well the good news is that another MyLotter came to the "rescue" and adopted Sassy...it meant I was in contact with GA based rescuers (and here I am in NY.....LOL) to see if arrangements could be made to transport Sassy from GA to NC where the other MyLotter was--but it was such a great feeling to know that I initiated the whole thing and was able to help

I belong to a lot of Yahoo pet rescue groups and the "alerts" I would get are exactly like this all the time--on a daily basis I might add, and from all over the country--in fact I left and unsubscribed from many of the groups cause it got to be too depressing after awhile--each and every day I get some alert to save dogs or cats that were going to be killed in some shelter --some were going to be put down the next day The sad fact is, is that all shelters are crammed full, whether they are kill or no-kill shelters....and don't kid yourself, many of the no-kill shelters put down animals too on a weekly basis as there just isn't any room for the unwanted pet population--the worse is when many shelters have to close down...for lack of funds..many pet rescuers get a rude awakening of how expensive it is to run a rescue operation--my one pet rescuer friend is starting to panic....she was solely relying and living off the money she got when her mother passed away...and it was quite a sizable 'estate'...it takes about $3,000 a month to get all the food for the cats and dogs she has, plus has to account for vet bills. She told me if she doesn't raise money on a regular basis, she's going to run out of money in about 8 months..so like then what? Like what is she going to do then with those pets she does have? I shudder to think--I don't know how many dogs she has but she has over 70 cats and some rabbits and guinea pigs

i hear you.i was aware of the over populations-you're right,it is depressing.sometimes i wonder what a great difference a better,reduced spay and neuter program would be in some areas. i know local to me,to alter one cat,is over $100 dollars.then mandatory shots,add another $50. many people don't have it,then there is kittens..and kittens,and kittens. it's a bad,bad cycle :(

Yes, I think if they did reduce the price of spay/neuter that could help tremendously in preventing litters and litters of puppies and kittens--Some shelters that have vet facilities will actually do the spay/nueter for free as long as you take the animal back (if it was adopted when young) to them--I know Bide A wee did that...

You can help by volunteering. If you can convince your neighbors and your friends to spay and neuter their cats and dogs, it will make a great help. if enough people just convinced 2 other people, it spreads.

This is very sad indeed. I am a cat lover. I have two beautiful cats. I dont live anywhere near that place, in fact I live in Australia. Our animal shelters have to routinely put down cats & dogs & I hate that. At Christmas time I found there was a no kill dog & cat shelter in the Adelaide Hills. I was so please3d to find out about this. I do hope another shelter can be found for cats & kittens at Sparta.

I so wish I was near there...I can't understand how a person could do this. It's another reason why ppl should spend the money and get their cats fixed. I pray that they all find homes. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~
