USB drive problem

January 6, 2008 3:19am CST
OK I have a problem with a 2 Gb USB drive. This drive had a password program on it which occupied a partitioned area of the drive. Somehow the password program has become corrupted and now I can't access my files which are on the drive. These include all of my photos and personal files so not being able to access them is something of a disaster. I need to find a program, (preferably free) which I can use to remove the partition. Hopefully, this will allow me to access the files on the main part of the drive. I have already tried Partition Magic, but that will not allow me to select any other drive other than the "C" drive which is of course the main hard drive on my computer. I need to find a program that will allow me to select another drive other than the "C" drive. Suggestions anyone?

Tried that. The drive is partitioned, one being encrypted and the Data Doctor will not read the part of the drive where the files are. Sine my first post, I've been doing some more research into this drive, and I've found that it's not even possible to merge or delete the partition. This might have allowed me to get access to the files. I have also located another copy of the password program to replace the corrupted file, however, this will still not allow me to access the main part of the drive.

That really sucks, I guess this shows the importance of a backup. Can the manufacturer help at all? Maybe you can send it to them and they can recover the files somehow.

Try using Ontrack data recovery software to recover your from your USB drive. Is is a very handy tool and it can also recover the files that you have deleted or lost as a result of drive formatting. You can also try to run a virus scan on your usb drive to see that is helps to fix the problem or not. Please do tell me if this helps ?

A virus scan of the drive produces no results. I've downloaded and tried the Ontrack Date recovery trial, but it has the same problem that I had with the Partition Magic - it can't even see the drive. I tried another USB drive and the Ontrack program could see that just fine so there is a more serious problem with the drive than simple data loss. Thanks for your input though, you have been very helpful.

Try disabling and shutting down your antivirus program program and then insert the drive. If this also not helps then insert your drive in a different pc to find out whether there is a problem with the protection program or the usb itself has malfunctioned.

This is a good question. Can Windows still see the device? If so, have you tried Scandisk? It's possible that your data files may be lost forever if you destroy the password program itself; I wouldn't recommend trying it.

I don't know. Perhaps the manufacturer of the USB drive can offer some advice. If it were possible to use partition software to get back files in a password protected directory, then the password protection software wouldn't be very good, would it? You are, essentially, asking how to defeat the password protection program (since it has been corrupted and you can't just use it to get the files.) This is far beyond my skills.
