I have taught my children that part of being a good person is being a good listener. How can a person have good response skills if they dont listen. I dont mean to sound political but I am afraid election time is a great exercise to use with your children. I have always tried to discuss current events with my children. I make sure that we talk about the day to day activities as well as world news. I think by listening to our children, we show them by example. Listening is a skill that helps children become courteous, respectful, and understanding individuals. With the election coming up, I encourage my children to listen carefully to what the candidates are saying. Then we talk about it. It really becomes quite fun and interesting to see what conclusions they come to. As a mother, one of the things I had to work on was to be able to listen and not to judge. Boy, was that a tough one. lol. And here I thought I was always right. lol

I dont care if my children grow up to be leaders however I dont want them to be followers either..I want them to walk to the beat of their own drum..That being said though, yes I do my best and have to raise my kids to be good listeners BUT sometimes it doesnt work out so well LOL of course they are 12 1/2 and 14 now so it comes with the territory...My reason for them being great listeners is so they have compassion and understanding of ppl and life in general really..but leadership isnt something I concern myself with when it comes to them to be honest with you...

That is exactly how I treat my kids-let them grow knowing, they must not be ordinary men-and amazingly my boys are 13 and 14 years respectively, just about the age of your kids-they know i take listening very seriously!
