Have you ever used a manuscript doctor?

Over the past few days, I have been helping out a friend with a novel. Trying to find all his plot problems and stuff like that. And it got me to thinking, personally outside of a couple of college classes, I have never had anyone do a major critique of my writing. I know that there are people that do this for a fee. And they must be making a living at it because their ads run constantly in the back of the writers' magazines. But I don't know anyone that has ever used one. So have you used one? If so, what was the going rate, and was the service worth it?

Yes. I worked with a copy editor from California who read my manuscript and then sent a total evaluation of what I had written. Was it worth it? Yes. That was a couple of years ago. Remember when you work with someone like this they know what editors want. Being a writer you want to have full control over your creation but editors have the last word so sometimes you have to bend. But it was good to have a professional look at it and give me ideas.

I've written a novel, but so far I've had no success in selling it to a publisher. I have never thought of sending it for a critical review, but I can see that such a review could be valuable. My sister has read part of it, and she has been pretty critical (in a valuable way) but she has not read the entire novel. I'd be interested in any replys to the questions at the end of your post as well.
