Hi Happy New Year to you You must keep them seperate only put them together for mating, but you must watch them as the female can kill the male. As for the female to do this perhaps she sensed there was something wrong with the babies, as this is what they do if there is anything wrong with them. If you had russian hamsters then they are ok in the same cage. Good luck with them, you might be best speaking to a good pet shop or even a vet.

I raised hamsters for years. Sometimes the mother will eat the babies if she is upset or feels threatened. The father hamster will eat the babies if you leave him in the same cage. But if the mother hamster is cared for properly and the babies are healthy she will raise them on her own. You must not handle the babies until several weeks after they are born. You scent (the one that you will leave on the babies when you handle them) will bother the mother and she will not have anything to do with them.

I'll tell you what I always do, since I already had about 20-30 hamster babies before. Well, the first thing you would do is separate the daddy from the mommy to another cage, with food and water, since the daddy hamster is going to be living there for quite awhile. Next, take a cloth to cover up the mommy hamster's cage, because hamster see better in the dark, and by covering up the cage with a cloth, the hamster would feel safer. Do not or try not to peep into the mommy hamster's cage, because if she sense that you are around, she might be paranoid and think you want to take away her babies, so she would rather eat them up. Do not change the wood shaving of the hamster within this period of time, even though it might be smelly. If you really need to change the wood shaving, be very careful, and only do it after the mommy hamster has given birth for at least a week. When you are changing food or water, try to be as quiet as possible, and after doing that, remember to cover the hamster cage with cloth again.

you have to give them enough food and put it near from the mother.. especially at night.. you should look for the father, it's it a good father or not, if not a good father, it's better to separate him for one month, after the baby can walk and big enough so the father can't eat them.. so far my hamster never eat their child

what ? mother eats her babies . I just heard the father will eat his babies, but I don't think mother will . If It happens because of the father , you just separate the father out of cage until the babies are 2 months old . I don't know how to solve it in the mother's case , because babies need their mother take care and give them milk .

A mother hamster are very responsible one. They know how to take good care of their sibblings. Once your hamster give birth immediately remove the guy hamster. Never change or clean their cage. Keep your hands off the cage and never touch the mother and babies. And all the rest the mother will be the one to feed and take good care of her sibblings. Once the mother hamster knows her baby will no longer survive and in bad condition she eats it because it is nutritious to her. My hamster give birth to five hamster all of them die because i touch the babies and after that I noticed that she don't mind her sibblings and soon they die. The second pregnancy of my hamster become successful and now they are starting to crawl. so don't worry trust to your hamster just follow my advice.

My baby hamsters are usually left alone for 2 weeks after birth. After that period, then I will start to clean their cages as I do not want to accidentally disturb them right after birth. I've read in some of the forums that you should not clean their cages after birth.

Sometimes when the litters are that small, the mother may not be producing enough milk. I had that issue with a litter of two gerbils. I had to feed them diluted kitten formula so they get their necessary nutrients. You'll know they're being fed because you can see the milk in their bellies.
