I am on myLot a lot and so the time that I have to exercise, the exercise have to really work. I want to get my heart pumping I cannot just walk around and beside being winter, I cannot move that fast without the risk of falling on my behind, and I cannot run very fast either. In fact, even walking fast does not get my heart pumping fast enough. It as if I have been designed to have to move fast to get my metabolism going, but do not have the shape to do it. I have done going up and down the stairs, but they have a high rise, so I cannot run down them, although I can go up them quick enough. I was thinking of doing dance steps, and was wondering if anyone who used dancing for exercise had any suggestions.

Dancing is my favorite form of exercise - I like to pick music with a fast beat and just do what I feel like doing (when no one is looking) and I get a great workout. Dancing itself is great but you can also add in some stretches or other exercises that use different parts of the body - it's the keeping up with the music that gets my heart pumping.

That sounds like a great idea. I have lots of music, now how can I do it before my husband awakes. Guess it's a good time to get an ipod.

My husband's a worse dancer then I am. You should have seen us at our son's wedding. Well maybe not.

ipod would be great but hey maybe he would be willing to join you in a dance or two before getting wrapped up in the daily tasks :)

How bout bike riding? That usually gets my heart pumping pretty good long as I'm peddling at a good clip.

I used to do bike riding, but since i gained weight, I have been afraid I would break the bike, I fell off a few times when the brakes locked and ever since then have been afraid of getting back on. Then it is hard to peddle in the snow. I do have a stationary bike, but that does not work as most women my age have and they have a harder time losing weight than I do.

I have my son's bike but I would not mind one of those eliptical bikes but we have to get the basement finished first. In the meantime, I am doing dancing and lots of walking.

I weigh 270 and my bike handles it just fine. As for brakes locking up, have you checked to see if they are working properly and fix/have it fixed if so. Properly working brakes will glide you to a stop, not stop suddenly so as to throw you off the bike. As for riding in the snow, ummmmmmmm...the roads should be cleared enough to ride on them cept for when it's actually snowing/blowing. Excuses don't work with me when there is always a way. Wish I had my bike out cause I would be out there now instead of here in mylot. As it stands, I would have to wade thru floodwaters to get to it which I'm not too keen on when the water temp is only bout 30F.

You know I am also active here. Everyday I go to work and go home on foot. So I think at least it is a kind of exercise for me:)

I work at home, but I do go for walks every day and in the house, but right now it is winter and I cannot go as far in the snow. That is why i was thinking of dancing, either get a dvd or make up some steps for a variety.

Dance steps are great and my favorite place to dance is on a rebounder. Mine is the body dome with bumbs over the surface. Any kind of rebounding is good, though because it tones the lymphs glands as well as helping burn calories and is also fun! It also improves balance. Like any other exercise routine, one wants to start out slowly though, work carefully, and build up endurance over time. Have fun!

Actually, suspenseful, I use dance as an excellent exercise. The great thing with dance, is with some steps, (like "old friend"), you can go as fast or slow as you need. And, with music, you can really get into the rhythm, put on slow music for a slower dance and the faster the music, the faster the moves...If you like I can send you the choreography to this step..:)

Dancing and getting your heart pumping: It's about the beat. The faster the beat or rhythum, the faster you'll move and the faster your heart will pump. I do one slow to moderate paced music to warm up, then a little faster one, then a faster one, until I have about 15 minutes of fast, then a slower one and a slower one. It's dangerous, especially when older, to do just fast and sit. Too much of a shock for the heart. But Slow to faster and faster to slower and slower is fine. Take care

Sounds good. I have started doing some dance steps and I find that I am back to my old winter weight now, so that will mean I will be able to lose more faster.

Congratulations! Wow! Old winter weight, mine was 140 lbs. Got a long way to go before I hit that. Thanks for best response, too. Take care
