Have you ever been to Tanzania?
I am thinking about a trip to Africa, specifically Eastern Africa - Tanzania and Kenya - to game watch (photo safari) climb Kilimanjaro and of course to meet the people and experience their cultures - cuisine, dance, art.
Have you been to Eastern Africa?
Have you been to either or both Kenya or Tanzania?
Tell us (me) about your experiences and recommendations.

This would not be an optimum time to be going to Kenya. Haven't you been watching the news?
I have been to a lot of Africa but not those two places. I've been to Ethiopia and North Africa. I've been to the Congo and along the Equator which I will never do again.

True, things are a little bit out of whack in Kenya the past two weeks, but not that out of the norm for Africa. Most likely this will be resolved soon and all will be good in a month or two.
While I would like to visit both Kenya and Tanzania (and preferably a couple more countries on the same trip) I can choose to bypass Kenya if need be. Nairobi is the best served airport in East Africa, but I could fly into Dar es Salaam.
Anyway, I am not leaving tomorrow, or even next month. While I am well known for putting together long journeys with only a couple weeks planning, I need more time to plan for this one. Plus the time frame is for Oct-Nov.

I have been to Kenya. I did a five day safari from Nairobi that stopped off in the Great Rift Valley and then to the Masai Mara. Lastly it went to Lake Nakuru to see the flamingos. Every night we camped in large tents with camp beds in. I saw many animals and took lots of photos. I saw many elephants and the baby ones of these looked so cute. I saw many giraffes and zebras. I was lucky to see rhinos. It was interesting to see the hippos in the muddy looking water. It was funny for the safari van to stop by a tree. Why is what I wondered. Then the man pointed into the branches. There was a leopard asleep but he was quite well hidden. How lovely it was to see him up there. I saw a lion and a lioness and the lion was happily munching away on his food. It was fascinating to meet the Masai Mara tribe and talk to them. I liked seeing their red robes and lovely jewelry. It was exciting to see them making fire and their dancing was excellent. I went back to Nairobi and bought some wooden animals, including a giraffe that stands in my bedroom at home. I hope that you go to East Africa and really enjoy a lovely safari experience.

It was in Tanzania that I got attacked by a monkey. I don't know what I did to p!ss him off, but I was standing there on a the veranda of The Tree Tops Lodge in the Ngora Ngora Crater, and he leapt at me from the trees! Hehehe, reminds me of a line in the movie 'Room with a View'... "Rome is where we saw the yellow dog..."
I don't know if Tree Tops is still there, or if you know about it or what, but it was built up in the trees and they kept all the lights out at night so you could sit on the veranda and watch the wild animals all around. One night we had already gone to bed and were awakened by huge roars. We ran out to the balcony and saw an elephant and a rhino 'involved in some sort of ferocious disagreement.
It was also in the Serengeti Plains that we saw the massive flock of flamingos take to the sky in one great motion from the lake they had been covering.
We were in Uganda during a time of political unrest, which only added to the excitement. While having cocktails one evening in the lounge we were surrounded by Idi Amin and his entourage. My mother says all evening his eyes were fixed on us. She said that at first she thought he was admiring an attractive woman traveling alone with her attractive, grown children. When she realized that it was with hatred that he was staring so blatantly at us she herded us all back to our little bungalow. I wasn't so wise and went back out to get something that I had left at the table and that was all it took to start a small uprising... we had men loudly congregating outside our windows and doors all night long, us inside wide eyed and silent, wondering if we were going to make it through the night alive.
