Plug a VHS into a DVD Recorder - will it work?

I asked the wrong question before, so now I ask what I initailly meant to ask! I have a vhs cam corder. I can copy from the camcorder to a regular VHS tape on my VHS player. But I want to copy to a DVD. So if I get a DVD Recorder - and I assume that it will copy whatever to a DVD - can I plug my camcorder into the DVD Recorder (like I would to the VHS player) and would it copy to a DVD? ANd would that DVD play on any DVD player?
