Recently, my boyfriend and I moved into a 2 bedroom apartment. With such a big apartment, naturally the place feels empty without a pet. I've always had a puppy and I feel lost without one. I keep trying to convince my boyfriend to just let me get one, and he continues to say this coming summer or sometime next year!!! I understand that he doesnt like little dogs ( I want a chihuahua ) but shouldn't he let me get one since it means so much to me?! =[ Let me know what you think. ANY advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Or if you've been in the same situation please let me know how you handled it!!

I went through this like 2 years ago when I lost my dog. He was outside all the time after I moved in with my now husband 10 years ago. I was used to having him in the house. But we had to compromise so when he passed away I was lost. After some time when I was ready to get a new dog my husband didn't want one, then he said I couldn't have a dog in the house. I didn't talk to him for almost a week because I felt that it was my decision too and our daughter really wanted a dog again to. He finally said yes and we ended up getting a purebred yellow lab. His name is King Louie and he's a great dog and very loved member of our family. There were a lot of things other than just wanting a dog to consider though. If he was in the house we had to be sure he got outside everyday to run and play so he was happy. We have a 3 acre back yard so he has plenty of room to run. When we were both working full-time days we had a really nice older neighbor that would come and take him for a walk everyday around 11 a.m. so he didn't have to be cooped up inside all day. And if we go away for a few days he gets boarded at a really nice doggy daycare where we know the people and he's very well taken care of. They're a lot of work but well worth it if you decidethat you're going to get one. Good luck.~D

I think that having a dog in an apartment isn't really fair to the dog, but since it is a little dog it might be ok, but it might not be very fair to your neighbours!! those dogs tend to be loud yappy dogs and nervous and nippy sometimes too. I dont really like dogs at all, i'd rather get a cat, but hey that's why we all have preferences right ? maybe you should wait to see what happens in your life while you are living together first like he suggested. You never know what could happen. What if you have to move suddenly ? or what if you get pregnant and the dog is jealous of the baby ? What if you both work all day long through the week who will let the dog out to pee ? lots of responsibilities with a lil mutt! Hope you can both agree on a comprimise ;)

Thank you so much!! haha I guess I got so caught up in the thought of having a dog I didn't really think of the consequences!! =] I love cats too haha do you think that they are more suitable for apartments? Thank you soo much for your input though, it really made me think about the neighbors views, etc. =]

I don't agree on having a dog in an apartment. Even if its a chichuahua. Dogs are ment to be able to have space to run free. I agree with your boyfriend that he doesn't want to get a puppy right now. You guys just moved in. How do you know if things are going to work out etc etc. Just cause it means alot to you to have a puppy doesn't mean you run out and get one. Don't pressure him into getting one. You want a pet get some fish if your in an apartment.

If you get one, please adopt a shelter pet and don't limit it to just a puppy. Older dogs are often put down every day because everyone wants puppies and young dogs. Older dogs can be more calm and more set in their way and that is good since you live in an apartment. You don't want to get an energetic dog that'll be bored to tears inside an apartment. I lived in a townhome for a few years and had a spaniel mix and a lab in my townhome. They were both fine. Dogs can live in apartments just fine. But do make sure you walk them a lot to get the exercise they need.
