The Purple Horse - This is a water colour I did. The Horse represents me and freedom enjoying everything the world around me has to offer.

I have heard FEAR described in this acronym:F- alse E- vidence A-ppearing R-eal Having been a rather carefree child, with a variety of fears, real and imagined, as far back as I can remember, I had the stronger desire to push through them. Growing up in the East end of Toronto, my mother informed me later in life that she'd often have to look and retrieve me, because I wouldn't return home when requested. Spending my childhood in the city, things have really changed from when I was a kid. You were basically given free rein to roam the neighbourhood and there was never any percieved danger. I believe children should be given the opportunity to freely explore without pending danger however this unfortunately, is not possible it seems, at least not in the urban areas in an increasingly dangerous world. So we have to find safer ways to help our children develop confidence, a strong sense of self and empowerment. Exploration of my environment gave me the opportunity to develop confidence and an individual. This proved to be the case as I got older as well. I learned there were many hard lessons along the way. I eventually found effective tools, to have street smarts, protect and stand-up for myself. I began to develop the ability to discern between right and wrong. As a young adult I was always wanting to challenge myself, attempting to face my fears; the truth being I was fearful in many ways and I wanted to understand why, and learn to overcome and conquer my fears, false or real. This has been a struggle, to say the least, having a number of major challenges in my personal life. I learned and continue to practice this lesson and always draw strength from this personal truth when fearful. Prayer, trust and persistence; these three always help me to push through the fear. I learned that having courage does not mean that you are not afraid, but you face what you are afraid of. I had to become my own best friend, in order to care enough about myself, to let others help me through my difficulties. Isolation and hopelessness enable fear to overwhelm. Today I still have fears of course many are false and some real. When I practice prayer, trust, and persistence I am enabled to overcome and face them. Being a performer, a teacher, being involved with equine sport and often having to speak infront of strangers I learned that breathing is an essential tool to use when trying to de-stress, relax and concentrate and it greatly benefits mind body and spirit. Fear has helped me to grow as a human being, taught me humility and to have a sense of humour. I pray I will always remember, that the power within me is far greater than any fear before me. Namaste

When I was young the only environment that held fear for me was the environment within the confines of the house in which I lived. Outside was complete freedom. There was no crime where I lived growing up. A child was completely safe going wherever they wanted. We all jumped on our bikes and rode for miles. We were a block from the ocean and a half a mile from a major river system. We were free to explore and swim and surf to our hearts content all summer. Even during the school year, I would get up at 5 and go surfing before school as often as I could.

Thankyou Adoniah for your response. I identify with that all to well, what you said about being fearful within the confines of your inside environment. For me I felt this freedom especially in summer's when we would travel to Nova Scotia from Ontario and spend most of the time by the ocean beach and in a very rural environment. I know now this is why I live where I do now in a very remote coastal area of Nova Scotia. This kind of environment as a child was where I was the most happy, content and could experience real serenity. As an adult reflecting on when I was the happiest in life I came to realize this is where I wanted and needed to be for my soul.
