School bus emergencies!

I dont know why I started thinking about this today..probably because the news was spouting about how bad the roads were. What happens if your younger kids are on a bus and the bus driver gets into an accident and is unconscious or worse? What do the kids do? Older kids riding the bus I know would know what to do, but my youngest daughter only goes half day and the only kids on her bus coming home are her age (4). They dont carry cell phones and wouldnt now how to work the bus radio...What if they were on an unpopulated road and not many cars drive by? Its scary to think, but its possible. I know a lot of school have aids that ride the buses to help with the younger kids, but our school doesnt do that for some reason. I seriously think they should make a law that makes it mandatory. Im thinking about going to buy one of those firefly phones for my daughters..The ones that only allow kids to call parents, grandparents and such...I just seriously freaked myself out about a bunch of poor little kids not having an adult to help then in a situation like this...Any thoughts?

Hmm, I haven't thought about this one! Probably something to think about huh? My son just started to ride the bus and he is four as well. I don't think he knows what to do in that situation, but who knows, kids suprise you every day! I know that a lot of times there is someone else riding my sons bus with the driver. They like to have the parents volunteer to ride once in a while. But that is a scary thought! Glad I don't live in BFE and we only live a mile or two from the school.

Most schools have mandatory bus evacuation sessions. Which teach the children exactly what to do in the event something like this happens. My younger sisters havent had to ride a school bus because my mother has fears like this. I know really younger kids cant always react calmly in such situations. In southern California they require two adults to be on a bus with children under a certain age. This is just my opinion.

I think Im going to look into our State laws about this because I think its necessary to have two adults on a bus. And as for a bunch of 4 year olds remembering the evacuation sessions its doubtful they would remember to get out..Its just soo scary!

Here in our school district 4 year olds are not allowed to ride the bus. I am thinking of pre-enrolling my soon to be 4 year old for next year, and I was informed that I must pick him up and drop him off, as they didn't allow children of that age to ride the bus. I think they have to be 5 and in kindergarden, although I must admit, 5 still seems kind of young. I prob. won't allow my little ones to ride the bus, until they are older. I rode the bus to school when i was little and I had an hour bus ride, I grew up in Michigan, and our bus driver got stuck in the snow, we got in a few ice accidents and spun out a few times, (all to be expected when they have school and you live out in the country where they don't plow).. I would worry about my little one knowing what to do if there was an accident, or the bus driver got sick, or had a mental issue.. (ie passed out or something) I don't want to think what would happen to a bunch of four year olds whose bus driver was uncouncious.. I think if you can do it, try to take the kiddos yourself, if not, do what you can to educate them on what to do in case of an emergency. (you could always see if a neighbor that drove her kids wouldn't mind taking yours too?) Good luck to you!

Michigan's icy roads have not changed I can tell you that. I wish that someone drove thier kids around here..Unfortunatley we live in the sticks and most ride the bus. I did contact the bus garage this morning and asked for a call back. I intend to bring this discussion up..I would feel better at least if there was an aid on the bus. Wish me luck! :)

I agree with you, a school bus transporting very young children should have and aide on board and if they don't they probably will blame it on funding (that they can't afford it). My sister did exactly that and got my nephew a "firefly phone" regardless what other parents or anyone else at school thought. She taught him never to take it out, do not show it to the other kids (it is not a toy), keep it in his picket at all times (it is very small) and use it only in an emergency to call one of the emergency contacts. Question: Does your childs bus have seat belts? I find this totally crazy because I saw a school bus the other day and the kids were running around the bus while it was in motion and there were no seat belts on any of those seats. Why doesn't seat belts apply to childrens school buses?

No our school buses do not require seat belts...I hate it...A seat belt saved my life when I was a small child and its a rule in our vehicles that we ALWAYS wear them. It drives me crazy that they dont allow seat belts. They say that it is a hazard and they wouldnt be able to get all of the kids unbuckled fast enough in an emergency..Even if it was just the small children I would feel a bit better...but if a bus rolled those kids would be on the ceiling..It doesnt make sense.
