Desktop or Laptop?

OK, I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get a new computer. Mine is just too darned slow and I've done everything I can for it, without spending any more money. I just don't know if I should get another desktop or a laptop? I really want a laptop so I can use it while on vacations and outside on the deck or even sitting on the couch with my hubby. I just can't see the expense of it. For the laptop I want, it's about $300 more than the desktop. What are your preferences and why?

I would want a laptop to be able to take it outside with me on warm and sunny days. This way I could enjoy the outdoors and have my internet fix at the same time!

I know! It was so hard deciding that over the summer. Internet our outside? Actually I usually took a book outside with me then. Oh, but it would be soooo nice... Even this past Wednesday we had a heat wave and it would have been nice.

My personal preference is for the desktop. I say this because I live out in the stiX and can only have Dial up service for Internet (woe is me) so there is no sense in having a laptop when I only use my computer at home.

That would definitely make sense. Whew, I remember those days, I don't know how you survive...

I agree that laptops might be more convenient, and the beauty of them is that you can take them anywhere, but for the money they cost you actually get less...most laptops just don't have the same memory/Ram capabilities...Of course if you actually don't need all that much memory/Ram no problem..but what about all the "Stuff" you currently have in your present computer...would it be able to store all that info in a laptop? So I don't know...I'd personally stick with a desktop

Right now we have an extra hard drive in my hubby's computer - 120 G I think. That's where we store all our "stuff" (music, pictures, documents). Since we're all wireless that's not as big an issue. And most laptops come with 80-120 G hard drives now so I'd be way ok with that. I've pretty much compared the two and I can get almost equal components and the laptop is more expensive. The laptop has smaller monitor, more protability. Those are my main issues. Argh!!! Why do I make this so difficult???

I guess it is just which ever one you want the most. We have both. My husband likes to get the laptop in the evening and sit in front of the TV with is glass of ice tea and play poker (not for real money thank goodness) hahaha I like the laptop on a pretty day or even a nice evening to take on the patio. I also like my desktop because it has the bigger monitor and I don't always have to use my glasses on it. I know I wasn't any help to you but that is why I like both of mine.

Those are all reasons I want the laptop and the desktop. I will most likely keep the desktop I have and keep using it. That kinda makes it a waste to have two though - for that kinda money. But if I give my son the desktop then I can rationalize the purchase of an "extra" computer.

Oh don't think of it as a waste to have both desktop and laptop. Just like right now, this new laptop is not working that well and I have gone all through it with tech and nothing good so on monday it will be going back and a new one on it's way here and I won't even be without a computer.

I could use my husbands' desktop if something happened to the laptop. Actually, there are about 5 computers in my house - only 2 are "working" right now, but two of the other ones would only a few minutes to get working enough for me to get by on.

My desktop is still pretty good! I will be looking into getting a lap top within the next few months, so that I can do things on it away from home. Especially since I am not home that much these days!

I would love to be able to takt it outside when it's nice, on vacation, on the couch with my hubby while he watches tv. The possibilities are endless! So is the expense it seems...

Don't buy a desktop whatever you do. I thought I would buy one so my son could use it too without me worrying about it being ruined since I could replace things like the keyboard easily, etc. But I hated it. My husband got me a new lap top for my birthday and i LOVE it!!! It is an acer aspire 4720z...it has webcam, 1 gb ram, pentium 1.46 ghz dual core processor...160 GB harddrive!!! Wireless card and that's just the beginning. i love this bugger, and it only cost him about $520 to get it after tax. it also has windows vista premium. The extra $200-$300 is worth it. I should add we considered everything...dell, hp, sony, gateway, etc, etc...i love the acer!!!

Eh, the webcam is not something I need, 1g ram is ok, but I can do better. I'm not really too psyched about Vista since it STILL (after a year) has so many bugs in it, so I'm trying to stick with XP which limits what I can get. There aren't many more specs that I need, but finding it at $520 is a bit unrealisitic for me. I've had Acer before and not been happy with the performance. For a lot of people, I'm sure it works great, but I really tend to push my computer to it's limits. Thanks - I will look into it and see if things have changed a bit.

i want to add that last night i *gasp* tripped over my power cord and dropped it...no harm done!! any other laptop probably would have been toast!! vista premium is better than vista basic...i would not stay with xp...i thought the same as you before... as far as "Maxing" it out...i can easily add another gig but haven't needed to...and i run a lot of shtuff all at once...mostly graphic design stuff so it definately can handle it... so...yes i love my laptop...hopefully you can find one you love too!!

Well, I'm keeping the current desktop. Either using it as a backup or giving it to my son... And $300 over our "budget" it a bit much to deal with right now...

I would rather choose a desktop rather than laptop if we consider the price, because laptop is more costly rather than desktop. But if you consider a small and handy, it is laptop. Easy to handle and easy to use everywhere.

I have to consider what I really "want" for the price. Since I hate any penny leaving my pocket, I like to make sure it's worth the added expense. If I can rationalize the portability issue, I think I'll get the laptop. Otherwise I think I'm stuck with this nice little desktop I have now that's not meeting my needs... I mean wants....

There's a laptop who's the smalles of the world. It's from asus and i think the price in america is 340 dollars. It's made in taiwan and in holland they ran out very fast because here a lot of people bought it. I've added a picture.Maybe that's the one for you and not expensive.Good luck in finf your laptop or pc.

I really need something that's well known and has a bit of a reputation. Mostly I'm concentratint on Dell.

I have both and I prefer the desk top. I do not like using the flat keyboard on the lap top. I also do not like it when I accidently run my thumbs over the window in the middle where you tap if you do not use the mouse it moves the whole page. None of that happens on the desk top.

I have only used a laptop a few times and think it's a bit difficult to get used to. When I'm at home, chances are I'll hook up my current mouse and keyboard to it, using it like a desktop. But I would LOVE to be able to take it with me when I want to.

I have a desktop and between my boyfriend and I we own three laptops. I definitely prefer the laptop. Yeah it may me more than a desktop but for me I don't even look at desktops anymore so the price for me has nothing to do with it. There are some laptops you can get for about $500. I like the convenience of a laptop more than a desktop. I can take the laptop with me anywhere and that's the biggest benefit to me.

I would soooo love the conveneince of being anywhere and having the computer with me. But the $$ is still a factor. Ugh, we spent so much money last month, it's going to be hard to break even... The frugal part of me says stick with the TOTAL inconvenience of the desktop that I have now - who cares if sometimes it takes FOREVER to get something done...

Laptop is definitely the way to go. For me, it makes sense because I spend numerous days on the road for business. But even at home or in the office I rarely use my desktops anymore. At home, I can use it no matter what room I am in. I'm an outdoor person and use it frequently while sitting on the deck or even out by the pool.....Well, not so much this time of the year...A bit chilly to be sitting poolside right now....LOL BTW, my 12 year old son has practically taken over my desktop since I quit using it because it is faster than his computer and can handle the newer games better than his. The laptop I have is fairly inexpensive but will run those same games even better than my desktop.......

You hit all my "laptop plusses" right on the button!!! And my (24 year old) son will gladly take my or my husbands desktop off our hands if we need to "recyle" one. It's just the expense right now is sitting a bit hard with me. I'm still that "frugal single mom that has no money" mentality and it's hard to spend $300 extra for something that's going to really do the same thing. UGH!!! Why can't this be easy! Where's that "Easy" button when you need it. Of course I just heard that Staples now has Dell in the store so that might be it for me...

i have the same situation of yours last year and i end up picking a laptop, coz i always travel and now the price of laptop is getting cheaper. here's some comparison; Laptop: -mobility, easy to carry -cool!! -do not need a big space or computer table -can upgrade memory, video card and harddrive Desktop; -for gamers -much cheaper -upgradeable all -for house only

I have drawn up my differences for laptop and desktop, there are a lot of pros and cons. I just have to figure out what is most important to me...
12 Jan 08
i would rather choose laptop bec. it is portable and is available and usable always wherever u r....but desktop also is important bec. it has a lot of functions that a desktop dont have....

I've been comparing the two side-by-side to see what would really work best for me. Of course, the laptop I can use anywhere, the desktop I can only use in one place.
