What do you think of CGI?

There are some movies that look great and some that look like a joke such as the new Speed Racer movie. I also do not really like the CGI in the Spiderman movies - it is obvious when the actor has been replaced by the CGI animation. What do you think?

Ok I am probably dating myself here. So please don't laugh too hard. I love the old stuff. I am a Ray Harryhausen fan. I like the Dark Crystal. and Labyrinth. And while I enjoyed to some degree the Star Wars prequels(Yodas lightsaber duel in particular) I prefer the puppets and stop motion in pictures. Besides being a wonderful if time consuming art form, it held alot of magic. Yoda Jabba they felt more realistic. Can anyone imagine a CGI E.T? Peter Jacksons re- doing of King Kong was good use of the technology. However my preference is for the black and white beast from the 30s. Now a great deal of this is my mothers influence. As children we sat with her and watched videos of Kong, Valley of the Gwangi, the 1960s jason and the Argonats. We saw Clash of the Titans in the theatre. At 11 I was in awe. And make no mistake, my family are movie freaks and we go to alot and Rent even more. But my daughter has grown at 4 to love Kong(original) she can sit hour on end and watch Labyrinth, if I would let her. The technology has allowed alot of great films to be made. But the magical quality is sometimes lacking.

I agree alot of the older stuff was more beliveable. I do like CGI when it looks good but most of the time, you can just tell. I find it hard to believe that millions of dollars can be poured into a film and of all parties involved in it's production, editing, etc that someone does not come forth and say, I just don't buy it. This part does not look realistic. Maybe they are just overbudget or on too tight of a timeline to care. I really liked the mmovie I am Legend with the exception being the mutated CGI people. Special makeup effects like Tom Savini's style or the vampire from Salem's Lot would be much more terrifying.
