I thought it was invented to keep kids mouths busy so they wouldn't cry, talk back, constantly ask so many questions and simply ramble on non-stop. LOL I think I heard once that it was an accident. I just don't recall right now. I can't think and chew gum at the same time. That's scary considering I don't chew gum. What am I chewing on hmmmmmm? LOL Yeah I think it was to keep kids mouths busy. Hehe. ‹(°¿°)›

LOL. I think it's to make kids cry too =P Anyway, just in case you do not know, Chewing/Bubble gums are banned in my country Singapore. They were banned many years ago. I have not chewed on one for a long time. I only get to chew one when I am overseas. I think Chewing gum was invented first and the initial purpose was to help us exercise our mouth and jaws. After a while, due to its popularity, they came out with Bubble gums and other flavors Chewing gum. I think I should chew more so that I have less chubby cheeks. =P

chewing gums are banned in your country? why? is it because people have the tendency to just spit it away anywhere? or stick it anywhere??

Many years ago.. maybe.. My government wants to keep Singapore clean and green. They enforced many rules that time. They banned the chewing gums and they fined people for littering and dumping. It works as now my country is indeed clean and green.

Well I guess I don't have to look for it on the net, some people have made good points here as well!;) But according to my OWN studies, I think?LoL It was invented for people to remove stress, it also helps us excercise our jaws to avoid suffering lock-jaw. during the war, soldiers rely on this to lessen the tensions they feel..

I see. so that's how soldiers used it. I never had any idea that gums were so beneficial for soldiers. was that during the 1940's?

If you think gum chewing was invented just to make kids cry, then you've gotta add pretty much everything in the world that was invented, because everything makes kids cry. Parents make kids cry. Food makes kids cry. Toys make kids cry. Pets make kids cry. What doesn't make kids cry? I think gum was invented to give people something to do. chew chew chew. and it was healthier than the other things that were invented to give people something to do.

i don't know if chewing gums can help clean our teeth. they contain a lot of sugar and that's bad for our teeth. ^__^;; but i do agree that it helps protect our ears while flying. ^__^

Having seen Charlie and The Chocolate Factory last night, where a new chewing gum was invented, that tasted like a three course meal, only poor Violet went violet over the blueberry pie! So let that be a lesson for those that love chewing gum! As to why it was invented? Well I wonder if they used it to help people stop smoking, maybe they knew the dangers of smoking back then and had this brilliant brainwave that chewing gum would be used for decades to come to help people stop smoking!

I think preventing smoking was thought of in the later part since the dangers of smoking aren't really alarming yet. ^__^;;

Chewing gum - Why were they invented?
First...is it you nephew or your mother's nephew? Secondly chewing gum was invented to reel eeek me out when someone decides the best place to dispose of their chewed chewing gum is under a chair or table that I chose to sit on...ewww. I also hate it when they spit it out on the ground and I step on it...I mean how do I clean that?!?

I use to chew bubble gum when I was a kid and it was because of the flavor. It was sweet and fun. As I got older, the bubble gum was trashed and I began chewing sticks of regular gum. Now I chew sugar free gum when I feel the need to chew. Helps keep the breath fresh, keeps the mouth busy and also can prevent some people from smoking.

I believe chewing is the natural instinct of human being. He has to chew so as to digest food properly. Other than that chewing also exercise the teeth and the gum and the mouth muscles as well. In this way chewing can also make ourselves relaxed.especially when are chewing something sweet and sticky like chewing gums. The most amusing part is that it can be blown in bubbles which are loved by all children and the teens as well. Chewing gum could serve better purpose than other food as it can be chewed repeatedly as long as you wish.

so chewing gums are "substitute" food since they can't be swallowed but can relieve hunger and they are forms of entertainment since kids find bubbles fun and amazing. ^__^

I do not think that bubble gums were made to make kids cry. I think they were invented in order to clean the teeth. It is probably a substitute for tooth brush when you do not have one.

Well...I kind of cheated. I had no idea why but I didn't go look it up, honest. What I did do was go research lock-jaw because someone mentioned it. You can get mild lock-jaw from too much chewing. So using gum, one of the causes of the mild variety, wouldn't have been made to prevent it. Kids used to chew pine resin way back when and someone must have said dude, we could so make billions off that. I'm sure they didn't term it like that though. Which makes sense, kids will put pretty much anything in their mouths... so why not profit off it?

LOL you cheat! ^__^ you couldn't contain your curiosity no?? LOL but I tell ya, at one point of time, my mouth got really tired chewing a gum! LOL so that really might have caused a locked jaw. ^__^;; yeah, kids will put anything in their mouth! even a dirty finger which just finished playing with dirty slippers!! ^.^;; and those wicked capitalists made a business on that. tsk.

To drive a wedge between moms and grandmas? lol. I think the real reason was for the candy companies to make a lot of money providing the public with a relatively inexpensive yet highly addictive treat that would keep them coming back to buy more.

In the beginning I guess it was because of the sweet things. The chewing gum from the beginning had lot of sugar in it. Now these days the dentist actually encourage you to use it, if it do not have any sugar in them. They even give you some after a check up to use after dinners, eating times etc. I do not use it, I rather wash my teeth instead. It´s better. Have a great weekend.

Yes, they really do. After every meal you have eaten you should take a chewing gum without sugar and with flour to chew. This gives your teeth god health and stay clean. You actually get some chewing gums with flour after you have had a visit with the dentist or the dentist nurse. We also see commercial on TV with dentists recommend us this every day.

It's invented to replace sweet but cant swallow it.. hehe.. Or maybe use it as a glue to stick lift doors together, make the fire department as well as the cleaners more busy.. LOL =P Or can even be used as a piece or art whereby ple chew the gums into the shape of animals and display them =D LOL.. WAt's even amazing thing that can happen is, change the whole set of fake teeth when it got stuck to the chewing gum.. LOL

LOL those are very funny reasons kun! i didn't think the fire department and cleaners would go out of their way just to get rid the place of chewing gums. ^__^;; i think i have childhood playmates before who played with their gums and shaped them into animals. ew. LOL maybe you did that when you were still a kid!!! LOL

LOL =D I dun really like chewing gum because it makes my mouth so numb after chewing it for so long.. hehe.. But i only like it for the initial sweetness ^_^ I know about the moulding into shape of animals because i saw in the, guiniess world records, b4.. LOL ^_^ I cant even create a bubble with the gum, so how can i even possibly mould an animal.. LOL ^_^
