I have always built my own computers so I could have exactly what I wanted in my box... but when it comes to laptops I have to buy and chose a Toshiba for my first one and just upgraded to a Gateway. What brand of computer(s) do you own in your home?

I believe that is the best way to go... then you know exactly what you have and get to put the components you want into the machine.

Same here...I also built my PC. Way better. Although I would love to have a $2000 24" iMac

I always use and have an Apple Mac, I won't go back to a PC now, I guess I have been spoilt, I love the Apple Mac products and find Apple very user friendly and ideal for my needs. I used to create a lot of maps and there was an illustrator programme which could only be used on Mac's. I started off with a PC but was encouraged and recommended to the Mac, well as soon as I got my Mac I wouldn't look at another PC again! It's wonderful and I have got so used to the workings of a Mac, it's like having an a manual car and switching to an automatic.

I figure if you are going to go with a Mac then go all the way and convert over to Linux. I have a dual-boot linux machine and have found that nowadays there is almost nothing I can't do with it.

I'm running an AMD Athlon64 myself. Would like to step up to a Athlon 64FX but funds don't allow it right now.

VAIOs are consistantly rated the best laptop computers hands down. They are durable, lightweight, have a huge amount of features, etc.... Of course they are all different but for the most part VAIO is a very very good laptop. Here is a place you can check. http://www.cnet.com/Top_10_notebooks_laptops/4520-6022_1-102337-3.html You can see that there are two VAIOS that are on the best list there.

Duh...here is an electronically challenged female who had to call her smart techie husband up to assist me with this: I have an HP Pavillion and an Acer notebook David has a generic Intel Core II custom system..because he also likes to know EXACTLY what he has in his box too...is this a guy thing? We also share a P4 workstation that we both use. Whew...there...you asked...and now you know. So long for now... Raia
