Changing Careers

How many people out there have changed careers? I've been in the same career since I was 18 and I need a change, but I'm scared. Scared of not making enough money, scared of not liking it after all, just plain scared of the change. I have a husband and 2 kids so it makes the change even more scarry. It isn't like I'm free to explore different options. The change has to work for my family's sake. What are your experiences?

I'm in a situation where I'm over 40, worked in one career for over 16 years and was then downsized. I then changed to a different career three years ago and that job is now ending, what's a girl to do. I'm a single parent and over 40, should I go back to my original career which I must admit never paid a lot of money or try to find another position within my recent career makeover? Can you say "tired", I just want a good job with a stable company but somehow (in this economy) I don't think it is possible. As you can see I truly relate to what you are saying. You must persevere and step out on faith....you must also have faith in your abilities as scary as it may seem. Yes, I am taking my own advice.

Jobs...careers...it can all become a rut. Did you know that the majority of the most successful people have had on average three different careers? Change in general is one of the most feared and fought against parts of life. Why fear it or fight it? Change is usually less fearful when you instigate the change yourself instead of having it thrust upon you. You seem to be teetering at a stage where you could initiate a positive change and make a leap to a new career. GO FOR IT!!!

Thanks for your words of encouragement! I think this change is a necessary step in my life. I NEED to go for it! Also, I didn't know that most successful people have an average of 3 different careers. That's interesting and great info..

I changed my career couple of months ago. I worked for years as a head of a branch library of our central library, and I got absolutely fed up with it. So I went over to national library. Yes, it's still a library but the work I have to do there is totally different. No administration anymore, luckily, I'm working on authority records. I'm using my foreign languages every day, I'm surfing on the net, I'm learning something new every day, and - I'm much better paid! So I have to admit, it was a very good decision.
