Where should I go?

January 15, 2008 6:52am CST
I have recently decided that by the end of the year Iw ill haev saved enough money to go travelling. I should have about £4000. The problem is, I have only ever been to Tunisia, Egypt (though I want to go again) and the Dominican Republic. This means I have the whole of the rest of the world to chose from when it comes to destination. I already know I'm not that interested in Australia so that's one out of the way, but how on earth am I supposed to decide where to start, what to see, how long it will take me & how far my money will go?! I'm just asking for advice really, from anybody who has travelled or is planning to. I want to be away for as long as possible, where do you think I should go?!

I live in the US and have never travelled outside of it. I would have no idea which direction to even go. It all seems so great. If you want to save some money on your vacation, I can help with that though. I can get it to you for wholesale prices.

Veronica, since you talk in Pounds - £ - I guess you are in the UK. You only mention three countries that you have visited, does that mean you have not explored Europe yet? When I left on my first journey, I wanted to go everywhere! So...I traveled for eight months, went clear around the world, and visited 26 countries (including OZ). I did it for about £4000 (actually about $8000 since I'm a Yankee) I did not always stay on the cheap, but I rarely really splurged either. You should think about what far-away places hold your interest from books, movies, hobbies, and other travelers tales and make a list. Try to plan an itinerary that circles through those places and back to home. You also need to decide what level of comfort (or out-right luxury) you are willing to travel. Hostels are cheap, hotels and resorts are pricey, and there are lots in between. Having a travel-buddy helps lower costs by sharing a room and on food if there are kitchen privileges. Another thing to consider is the time of your travel. Visiting places out of normal tourist season can help lower costs, plus you don't fight the crowds. Air travel is quick, but has become much more expensive the past three years. Traveling by land to neighboring countries can also help stretch your budget. Also, at your age and with a British passport you have options for working (albeit lower paying service and labour types jobs) in many of the countries of the former Commonwealth. This could allow you to travel longer and visit more places than many folks. Also many other countries allow college students to work some while visiting. Once you are past college age, almost all countries have very strict employment laws and require all kinds of papers, permits, and special visas for working. Feel free to message me if you want to discuss any of this further!

Wow! Thank you so much, it really helps hearing from people that have actually tyravelled as I don't know very much at all. I hadn't even considered permits and visa's. Oh what a sheltered life I lead! hehe. Nica x

hi nica! wow! what a problem! hehehe 4000 lbs should bring you to a lot of places...maybe you should determine first what would interest you. is there someone going with you? in our case, beaches are not in the list because my husband doesn't like beaches. do you want to remisnisce the old world? just visit exotic places? just relax and unwind? or the beach? first determine what you want then you can narrow down your choices. maybe you would like to take an Asian tour? with that kind of money and not too expensive accommodations, you would be comfortable in 3 countries for an entire month. maybe thailand, malaysia, singapore, beijing in china, hongkong, philippines...that would be pretty good. or maybe japan? japan is quite expensive though. if you're visiting japan, you might as well concentrate there or just visit a neighboring country. God bless you and have fun! :-)

That does sound like the way I was gonna go, although I have a great love of Africa as well so I'm torn between the two. I'm going to be travelling alone so I'm not too sure which would be safer! Basically I wana do as much as possible, you won't find me sprawled out on a beach very much, I want to be kept active, see some really beautiful exotic places & meet some fantastic people. i'm not fussy when it comes to accommodation luckily, a tent will suit me fine if that's all I can afford! I just want to get out there and live. Thank you for your advice, it really is appreciated! Nica x

You could go to South Africa and see the beautiful city of Cape Town, then travel along the beautiful Garden Route and end with a safari seeing wild animals. As you seem to like beaches and history why not go to Central America? There you could see Mayan ruins and spend time on palm fringed beaches. I flew into Cancun and saw Belize and Guatemala on that trip. Both those places come at a reasonable cost. I have been to the Seychelles and really loved it but it is so expensive. I would like to go to Canada. Have you thought of going there? It has interesting cities, a pretty landscape and fascinating wildlife. You should think of season for an idea of the likely weather, Lonely Planet is reliable for giving an idea of costs and travel books are nice to borrow from libraries. I hope that you will choose a very enjoyable trip to go on. Good luck.

Wow, so many ideas to choose from. This is where I come unstuck. most people pick a route that pretty much links up each place they are going, I keep deciding on areas so far away from one another it's like I'm zig-zagging, not going round the world. Thank you for your advice though, it's so nice to have fresh ideas, even though it does just make me spoilt for choice. Nica x

well, i've travelled a lot over the years, when i was a kid mostly but i always wanted to go to japan. it's such a wonderful place and not once was i able to go. i am currently learning the language so everything is going fine right now. i'm also saving up so that one day i might be able to go there on a visit or perhaps i might even stay there and maybe get a job as an english teahcer. i've just really been interested in japan. maybe you should go there i know that the people there are really friendly becuase one of my friends has been and he told me all about it. it's really amazing.

Wow, you're learning Japanese, that has to be hard? I know what you mean about it being a fascinating place, somehow seeing it on films doesn't quite show it's full potential I think. It is definately a place that's high on my list of 'to do's' do you know anything about accomodation there? is it cheap to find somewhere to stay? As it looks like I'm going to be travelling alone do you think it would be safe? Nica x
