Is the Apple Air all hype and no byte (pun intended)?

I just saw the recording of the Steve Jobs footnote of 1/15/2008, and I must say that I was shocked at the futuristicness of the Apple Air. Apple has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to technology and style, and the Apple Air is certainly no exception. At a price tage of $1,799, I'd probably consider a few alternatives, namely, one of the cheaper macbooks. My cons for the apple air: 1. Not much room for upgrade 2. Only one USB port - you'll have to carry a splitter 3. No optical drive. 4. Relying on "bluetooth" from iMac. My pros: 1. It's FRICKIN' HOT. In terms of similar ultra-portables, I suppose that you get a good deal of tech for your dollar. But honestly, the Core 2 chip on the Air will be outdated in less than a year. If you've got the money to burn, and you want a hot ultra-portable, then the Air is probably for you. If you're still on the ropes, I think you should consider the vast array of alternatives.

I like it a lot... optical drive is a thing of the past with everything being easily downloaded from the internet, I was actually expecting a no optical drive computer. As for the USB's I don't mind having to get a splitter because of the gorgeous design & ultra portable-ness.... I dont like the 'no room to add more memory' part, but thats what the imacs for & I love the idea of using another computers optical drive! Although it might be a little pricy, that wont stop a true fan from buying it!

Maybe that's just it, it's a true fan's computer! Thanks for replying! I'm waiting for the new macbooks to come out, probably this spring.

I like to think of the macbook air being a product for "Rich, travelling business men" - It's expensive, but very portable. Don't get this machine if you're a gamer or power user. Still, apple is still the way to go for heavy computing - I think the macbook pro is the best laptop out there.

I think Apple realized that the Macbook Air is a joke. I don't know. They've recently released a thinner but powerful Macbook and Macbook Pro, with no price increase. That says a lot about Apple still sticking with the MB and the MBP. MBAir is still lighter than the previous Macbooks but power wise, its lacking in that department.

Well I just like it because of the built in wifi and thats why I want it because we go on vacation a lot and I cant go on the internet on vacation and with that hopefully I would be able to. I will deffintley buy that labtop once it goes down in price and im almost certin it will. Probally within a year it will be below $1000 just like everything else how they go down in price.

This is what I've been waiting for. I just want to know how light it is, because it looks longer than the macbook. Is this on display at the apple stores yet, because I also heard that while it is the thinnest notebook, that it still weights about the same (if not more) than the other mac books.

This is a machine designed for mobile people who travel a lot and maybe don't need much power. It's a more expensive macbook. I'm hapily sticking to my macbook pro - completely different league for power. Still looks alright too. mmm multitouch...
