I saw this today on the news. I can't say what I think about it since my child is only two, but I can see some benefits as well as some drawbacks to this new(?) idea in education. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-01-25-split-schools_x.htm

I think this is very beneficial especially after primary school. The junior high and senior high benefit from it. my son went to a school that seperated the boys from the girls and the distraction was a lot less and the studies much better - the girls were on the same grounds and had the same teachers and subjects, but not at the same time. Everyone was an A and above average.

I think when the children are young it is important not to segregate them so they can learn to socialise well. However it has been found that when they get older both boys and girls benefit from segregation of the sexes. The boys, who normally play up in class in front of the girls do much better and the same applies to the girls. Co-ed is fine up until they start getting crushes etc and then segregation is better to cut down on the distractions.

I was grown up in a society where segregated schools were very common, more than the mix schools. I was admitted to a combined school and I studied in a mix class untill grade 7th. Then got separated for two years and in the middle of 9th grade our class was merged again. There for sure are many disadvantages of segregating the class in early child hood. A mix class for young kids have more good things to offer than bad things. Kids learn to compete against each other as humans, not as males and females and there's more descipline among them as neither of the gender want to put themselve in an embarrassing situation in front of the opposite gender. Once separated, I noticed my class mates lacked decipline and they got more relaxed as they always thought they had same gender people in the class and no body's watching. Distractions caused by opposite genders is a major disadvantage in mix schools but that disadvantage does not start before 7th or 8th grade so it's safe to try a more natural environment, a reality based system where men and women work together.
