Teaching abroad...

January 16, 2008 4:44am CST
I teach English Literature in secondary school Scotland and am looking to broaden my horizons by teaching abroad. As English is my only language it would need to be in an English speaking country. I am quite interested in going to Australia or New Zealand. Does anyone have any advice?

You should look into getting your TEFL certificate as the other poster suggested. I got really lucky and found a school that's awesome to teach at. Plus the experience of being away from home is such a refreshing change of pace. I will say that if you do have a really strong accent you might have difficulty getting a job.

English teachers here in Japan are very much in demand, as far as i know. the only thing is, you got to have at least the basic knowledge of nihonggo (Japanese language). well, just my idea.. you might want to consider it :) good day!

Many times is easier to become a teacher in a country that does not speak English natively - native speaking teachers are in high demand particularly for business. And today's method pretty much are all immersive so no need for knowing the other language. It does help a little knowledge. Australia and New Zealand might have vacancies in remote locations. Check TEFL.com and Good luck.
