How do you define 'toddler?'

Is it a certain age range, skill level, or both? What are the skills and age ranges included in toddler? Are there different categories of toddlers? I'm curious because I see people have very different views of what a toddler is. I have my ideas, but I want to hear what others have to say first, because I don't want to influence answers.

Thats a good question, I have wondered myself. But I was told that a baby is newborn to 2, toddler is from 2-4, but I think 4 is kind of old to be a toddler.

I have never really thought about it. I call my son a baby or a big boy (usually when telling him he should tell me what he wants). He is 18 months now. He walks and can talk though often doesn't want to. I think that by both skill and age definitions he fits into it. I just have never thought to define it. I believe baby center (the website I visit quite often) defines it as 12-24 months.

I've wondered about this one too. I tend to call my son a "baby" still instead of a toddler, even though really he probably is a toddler. He's 19 months old, and he both walks and talks fairly well actually. I just got so used to calling him a "baby" that it seems weird to say "toddler" instead. When I was younger I remember someone telling me that being a toddler started at 2 years old, but I think the skill-based assessment probably fits better.

Based on oxford dictionary, a toddler is basically a young child who walk with short unsteady step.A child upon reachimg 12 months of age should have already attained this, but most attain it earlier than expected. Some would be delayed and catch up later. So I guess, I am guessing the age is 12 months to 24 months. It is in toddlerhood, where we witnessed children as "terrible two" because of their struggle to be initiative and exploration. Thus, the negativism. With regards to this, adult should deal with it by not giving them an option to answer yes or no because they will always say "no" no matter what.Instead address your task to be done for them in a positive way and response. This way,it gives you more control and direction to the situation and task to be done promptly.I had proven this it works with my kids.

I always think of a toddler as a child from about 18 months to 3 years. If you were to base it on the learning to walk thing, my daughter would have been a toddler at 8 months old.

In my mind a toddler's age starts at around the 18mth mark, when they seem to just 'toddle' everywhere. I guess it lasts for about 12-18mths. As for skills well, walking is the big one I guess, talking, a certain level of independence or rather attempts at independence, and a greater level of understanding (ie can follow certain directions and complete easy tasks.
