Illegal immigration, should they be able to claim for our benefits.

I'm not huge on politics and am slowly peaking my interests in it. So I hear of talk of allowing illegal immigrants to claim on social security and other government funds. Why should they be allowed to get the money we put in and work for? Isn't there already talk of it running out and they want to give it to people who don't even contribute to the fund!

Wow! I have not heard that yet. Maybe its because Im not big on politics myself. But, in my opinion they should not be entitled to our benifits! Its really not fair. It seems sometimes they have more benifits then Americans. Now, if they are legal that is another story but the illegal ones its just not fair!

Yes, I don't think it is a major talk of issue at this point in time. Although it has been brought up, so I'm sure they will bring it up again. Thank you for your comment! Maybe it would encourage the illegal immigrants to become legal!

I think that is is unfair because they seem to get more benefits that we do, and to me that does not set well....

They should not be allowed to collect; but, they DO pay into it. Many of them use fake or stolen social security numbers so they can get jobs. They pay the same taxes - income and social security that you or I do. When the ID numbers are stolen - the person that the number belongs too can get into a LOT of trouble when the IRS finally catches up with the problem. One woman who was looking for work, was told she already worked for the company she applied for a job with. Further investigation shouwed that more than 8700 illegal immigrants were ALL using her social security number and the IRS was looking for her for "under reporting her income" and paying too little in taxes. But, even though these illegal immigrants are paying into the system, they should not be allowed to collect benefits that they did not LEGALLY earn.

You need to check more than your credit report. YOur credit report will NOT show if someone else is using your ID unless they are opening new credit accounts. You need to check the annual statement that social security sends out each year. If you know you only made $20,000 and it says you made a lot more that is NOT a typo. Someone else is using your ID number to work. Also, with the IRS; you are "guilty until proven innocent" and it can take a lot of time and money to get this straightened out with them.

Well, first of all sorry it took so long for a response. My e-mail isn't alerting me for all of the comments I've gotten back. I didn't even know we had a social security report! Thanks for all of your helpful information on how to protect myself. Isn't it ironic how they can say we are guilty until proven innocent, yet this country was founded on innocence until proven guilty. Dirty government takes over when it comes to money! Thanks!

That is what I love about this site, you definately gave me new ensight on this matter. I thank you deeply for your input on this issue. However, are they able to hold the woman responsible for those taxes? That is a very interesting thought to keep in mind when checking for fraud against your credit! Thanks again.

I must have missed this, how would they get social security if they don't have a valid SSN?

It wasn't talked about for very long, but they typically use fake SSN. I guess with so many overworked employees, they keep slipping through the system. Plus, they had mentioned making them some form of ID so that they could collect it. Crazy, but it was mentioned from US government!

most probably are because they have fake ID's and SS. Thats the problem. What I think they should do is make all illegal immigrants get the proper certification so they can pay taxes as well as seek whatever benefits they need at the time. I tried to get some extra support (food stamps) but couldn't get it because we 'made too much'. I'm a mother of 2 with a 4 person household A LOT of bills and only ONE income. I pay taxes, and I wasn't planning on bleeding the system. I just needed a help to not worry about if my children are going to eat a jar of Peanut Butter (they were at the time) for dinner, like a few months. But other families and probably quite a bit with illegals living with them are using social services. That is one big issue. illegals was health benefits and other things. Then they should study, learn English, take the test and get citizenship...Thats why I kinda like Clinton's plan to try and do that. Its a lot cheaper then gathering up all the illegals and kicking them out. Legalize the ones already here. Toss out the ones who have committed a crime here or in their original country (aka fugitives). And have better work policies for people trying to cross and work with the other countries to try and offer more/better jobs in their own country. Something like that. Can't remember the whole thing.

I agree. Just do something to improve the system because the system is obviously broken. I think it makes more sense to just force them all to become legal instead of kicking them out because if you kick them out then they'll keep finding ways to come back in. So I say force them all to become legal and those that keep comming here illegally, fine them for everything they got. Don't throw them in jail because they're getting a free roof over their heads and free food. Fine them for not obeying the laws. But first fix the system so they can't take advantage of it and get social security and other benefits if they're not legal.

The distribution of welfare I believe also needs a look at because of the fact of what people think is "too much" income isn't the issue. If they would take the actually ones bleeding the system off of it, and force them to get jobs they would be able to help other family thats maybe do have a little more income, but still need assistance. It would save alot of money to legalize then jepordize more police force in trying to extradite them. Thanks for your comment!

America was founded on illegal immigration so I can't say that I dislike illegal immigrants. If you ask me the best thing for everyone would be if the U.S. just annexed Mexico. Most of the illegals are Mexicans and they come here because their economy is so bad. The U.S. has given them so much money to help with their economy but it just hasn't worked. So why not annex Mexico, have them use the same currency as we do and make sure Mexico follows the same minimum wage laws that the U.S. does. That will help Mexico's economy, encourage Mexicans to stay there and work there and keep U.S. companies from outsourcing so many jobs to Mexico. It would be a win win for everyone. But it will never happen so I guess the next best thing would be some sort of compromise of all the different immigration proposals. I don't believe illegals should get automatic amnesty. I think that if they want to live in this country and recieve benefits like social security and health care then they have to be U.S. citizens which means they should have to learn English(and yes I know that the U.S. has no official language but I think English will be the official language soon as a result of this immigration mess) pay taxes, serve on juries, etc. etc. At the same time I don't believe that those who don't want to be citizens should be forced out. They just shouldn't be receiving the benefits that citizens get here. I honestly have no idea how they are now but obviously the system is broken if that's happening. They still should have to pay the normal income tax but they shouldn't pay social security or medicare and thus don't recieve those benefits.

I find that I go along with some of your suggestions. I definately like that they would be required to know English! Nothing is more irritating then trying to help someone that can't speak your countries dominate language, but wants to live here. As for just paying taxes sign me up for that, because before I'd ever have the opportunity to claim on social security or medicare it will most likely be depleted. If you are a citizen you should be one to the fullest, and if you're not then you shouldn't be allowed to work and take jobs from actual citizens! But your idea to annexed Mexico actually seems like the most logical idea yet on immigration! Thank you for your comment.

Thank you. I don't want to sound like the U.S. should take control of Mexico because it already seems like we're trying to take control of so many other places that people don't want us to be in, in the first place but at the same time I think annexing Mexico would be a win win for both the U.S. and Mexico. I'm sure that there are some negatives to it but I think that the positives would far outweigh the negatives. Whatever they got going on down there obviously isn't working because so many of them want to come here all the while U.S. companies are outsourcing jobs to Mexico because their workers are paid far less which is costing Americans jobs. If Mexico has the same economy and the same minimum wage laws as the U.S. then that would be one less place that Americans would be losing jobs to. I can't say for sure that that would keep U.S. companies from outsourcing elsewhere but it sure couldn't hurt.

Amen, to that! I would love to see more Americans have the availability of jobs. I agree that would solve some major issues combining Mexico into the US, sure it may bring other issues, but none that I think would out weigh the positives. Thank you for your input.
