I would have put this under a nursing discussion but I didnt really know if it would fit since its not really a nursing situation...its a doctor situation. So here is my question... what does Osteochondral lesion of the talus mean? I was in a car accident and they got that diagnoses for my foot out of a cat scan done on my foot. I was told it was a joint disorder and very uncommon that this happens. From my research on the web about it Im thinking its something like my joint is not placed right in my foot but im not sure. So for all you doctors and trained medical people can you describe for me what this exactly means in terms i will understand. Will it need surgery? I have an appt to go see a specialist but I have waited almost a month now to find this out and dont want to wait any longer. Info much appreciated. thank you.

I am not a doctor, but an LPN. Well not practicing any longer but I was many many years. What I can tell you about this is that it is a fracture or shearing(stretching) tear of the cartilage in the ankle. It is rather rare and happens in some sort of sprain or injury. Most often I have seen and read that it happens in a crushing of the foot and ankle. Treatment will depend on what your orthopedic decides is best. Surgery sometimes is indicated. Most of the time what is needed is immobilization, some sort of NSAIDS such as motrin, and time itself. You could be in for a painful road ahead. I am Sorry this happened to you. But You will be fine, just do what ever your doctors tell you to do. This is sometimes more painful then a full blown break of the bones.
