How tolerant are you?

United States
January 20, 2008 1:31am CST
Every day of our lives we are taught to be tolerant of others in some way shape or form. Lately I have notice that not only online are people less tolerant but out in society also. Why do you think that is? Do you consider yourself a tolerant person? How tolerant are you and where do you draw the line? I'm talking about all types of tolerance here it doesn't matter if you talking about killing the guy driving the mac truck in front you who is going 15 mile under the speed limit or you just don't like that way the person acts , etc. etc. So Please feel free to speak you mind there are no judgements here this is a free area to truly speak how you feel on this subject .. Again thank you ahead of time for participating in this subject.

If we are going to rank ourselves in terms of tolerance with a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest, I would rank myself at 6. It is one area where I need to improve myself. And i thank God for giving me a soft heart to accept corrections!

It really depends. Sometimes I’m the type of person that doesn’t really care about the world hehehe.. I don’t mind others business in my society as long as they’re not concerning mine in a way that I get offended. But there are also times that even if I don’t know the person I would ask him/her to please consider the value of civil law or whatever law it connects to the offensive act. I mean, as part of the community I still have the duty to maintain its good conduct right.

I feel most of the time, I am very tolerant. I do feel that I lose my cool faster with issues that come up with my special needs son. I think that is more because he cannot defend or stand up for himself. I have found that since I had him to deal with that little things just don't bother me too much anymore.

It's not eassy to say whether I am a tolerant person. I think the relationship between you and a person decides how tolerant you are. The closer the person is to you, the less tolerant you are to him/her. Generally, I hope people are more tolerant so that there wouldn't be so much violence in the world.

I am not a tolerance person, but I also sedlom quarrel with others.I think this is because of my character,I don't think there is necessary to quarrel with others for some lillte things. But ,sometimes,I still angry at some people when he/she said some words which I think I can't tolerant,at then,I can't tolerant and beat back, this also has exception,I have learnt how to slow down my angry, how to be claim.

I used to be very intolerant ,short tempered hasty and impulsive.I am born with these traits. As there is nothing to be proud of these qualities I have been trying to be tolerant especially after my daughter is born.I have definitely improved a lot.But I can do with some more improvement.

I think I'm pretty tolerant, but then again people usually think they are more of something than they really are. I generally think people should just be left alone to live how they wish to live as long as they aren't endangering others and aren't breaking any rules or laws. I draw the line at that. It's fine if you want to be stupid and hurt yourself, just don't go about putting anyone else in danger. That's not right.

Sorry but I have to laugh ... :) I really appreciate what you said. Now let me explain why I'm laughing when you said that it's fine if you want to be stupid and hurt yourself I got a picture of someguy bungy cording off the golden gate bridge and getting the top of their head smacked into the water. LOL!! Thankyou for your response and thought process I appreciate it.

I tend to have way more patience now then i did before i had a baby. However. I am tolerant of my child, but other people still make me mad.. I dont drive, but when i'm in the car with my friend i get a little testy if its the morning and we are going to get our tea.. Like when someone cuts us off, or someone doesn't signal, I dont get mad persay i guess, but we b1tch at them from within her car*giggles* I AM intolerant to stupidity, and we're not talking about uneducated people, i know i am not the sMARTest bulb in the pack.. but you dont have to be book smart to have common sense. The people that lack common sense.. those are the people that stir up my blood! My morning coffee has no kicked in yet, so i cannot think of a good example just now, but if i think of one i will come back to your discussion and let you know about it:)

You know I have started to look forward more and more to your answers to my discussions they seem to make me smile and I can see today me doing the same things you do in the car when someone cuts off the car you were in. Now me on the other hand I love driving it's a passion I have a problem staying the speedlimit when I'm by myself in the car, but when my family is in the car I drive I'm a totally different person. But when I'm alone I don't drive wrecklessly like swerving in and out of lanes but I drive fast I'm use to having to do alot of interstate traveling and driving where speeds reach up to 90mph .. Like on the way to Maryland I was going 75 and a cop passed me without lights like I was standing still. It's quite funny becuase say the speed limit is 65 and the speed of traffic is 80 noone gets pulled over but if the want to slow it down they get a couple of cars to race to the lead cars then put themselves in front and slow the traffec down that way it's actually quite safer for them to do that than to race after a fast car and pull them over. Now about stupidity there are all kinds of stupid and I don't do well with any of it. I gave loungeact my sign because he asked what our sign say and here's what mine says .."Warning !!!Stupidity may cause random acts or gestures of violence!!!Thank you for your response and have a nice day!

I'm the type that treats others as they treat me. I'm nice and all that until you do something to tick me off. I don't have any kids, but I'm very protective of my nieces and nephews. You mess with my family or friends, you can kiss our "friendship" down the drain. I'm the nicest person, really! lol The thing that really gets me though are foreigners that think they can come to America and not learn our language. It really ticks me off when you go to a store and there are all these foreigners that speak their native language and hardly know a word of English. I feel they should learn English because if I was to go to a foreign country I would feel more comfortable knowing their language and I would also expect them to want me to know their language as I do if they were to come to America. I don't know. I am sorry, I just had to get that off my chest.*Sorry if I offended anyone. That wasn't my intension*

I tend to be overly tolerant most of the time. About the only thing I really don't tolerate well is someone lying to me, that will get me fired up quicker than almost anything else.

Sneezeknlenx, I agree with with on your points I still don't get why they aren't given classes to learn our language. You know that when I lived in Texas one thing they did was teach you spanish in elementary school since we had a lot of spanish speaking people. My step dad had people that worked for him and only spoke spanish.. I don't mean to be rude but like you said if I go to France they expect me to learn there language to get around and get what I need. Why is it any different here. I love different languages and cultures, but I think it would be nice if they at least learned to try a little english so that we at least understand what they are saying. Wait til you go to a nail salon and get a full set of nails on I can never understand what they are saying. For one day I would love the power to know what they are saying. Now if they are talking to family members and friends I can see it's easier for them to talk in their native tongue what bothers me is when they are actually shopping and trying to talk to a customer service person at the counter and they are talking their native togue expecting us to understand them. LOL .. I hope that everyone doesn't get upset by this. It's not that I'm not tolerant of their language it's just if they want a job and be able to comunicate and live here they need to learn our language and I feel that it should be provided to them. Thank you for your response. Have a nice day.

I believe there is a threshold for every single person in this world except for some XCPTIONZ.I am very tolerant towards most of the people.I try to do everything I can to even help strangers but i never really got close to anyone.I don't let myself get close to any one but will be there for people no matter what.Others issues become more than mine when there is a need for help.I never share to people, so there was always very free and non-expectant.Toleration was very easy.I realized that my tolerance level is very less when it comes to close people like family.I expect them to understand and know what i want etc.The family issue bothers me a lot, I sometimes don't know how to handle it.When it goes outside the family, nothing at all bothers me.I will be like the queen of tolerance whether someone stepped on me,hit my car, yells out annoyingly etc I stay cool no matter what.I always give reasons from their sides for the acts they do and so it doesn't annoy me at all.It is totally opposite to only my family members.Outside the family, I consider others important than even me.Tolerance is very easy in that case.I also enjoy doing it.:)

Hello bellaofchaos A god topic. And I would like to add VALUES to this topic. Tolerance are indeed a word we should take some time to think about. I feel that tolerance and values are two words going hand in hand. Because the value you have for things in life also say how tolerant you are. And if people should be more tolerant we also should have god values. This is a chain that comes from generations to generations. And if people are going to change for the better, generations should change their value for better. I mean if you have bad values, it gives you bad tolerance or if you god values you get god tolerance. I am very tolerant, and my values are for a god cause. We have to realize that we are all different, we think different, we look different...etc....so if you would like to be accepted, as you are, in the society, you need to accept others to. But most of all, we all have to accept each others differences. Have a great weekend.

I would say that I'm 98 percent tolerant most of the time. The problem comes in on those days when you are just in a bad mood and take it out on everything. Maybe something you believe in is being chastised on here and you can't just bite your tongue. I have something to say about anything really but I let feelings get in the way of my tolerance sometimes. Sometimes it's a good thing and sometimes it isn't but it is the way Iam. All in all though, I'm very tolerant in most situations.

I think people are less tolerant because the times have changed. In my opinion most people are all about making a dollar and time is money. So, I think we get so hurried and that makes us less tolerant. I myself try to be a tolerant person, but one of my pet peeves is bad drivers. I cant stand it when someone doesnt know how to drive quite as well as I do, and I shouldnt be that way. I think having kids makes you more tolerant as well. Also when things are put in front of you, then you learn more patients. I think we should all be more tolerant but there is no helping some people.

I think I can honestly say I'm a very tolerant person; what I don't tolerate is intolerant people...lol! Seriously I don't have a whole lot of patience so your example about the truck in front of me going 15 mph under the speed limit would wear on my nerves but when something like that happens I do my best to chill out and relax. Like another poster here said I also respect anyone no matter what their views on politics, religion or any number of issues as long as they give me the same respect but if they don't, I'll mix it up with the best of them. I can tolerate things if it only concerns me. But, if it's my family at stake I am very fragile and couldn't attend any tolerance. I would react or stop and think or get rid when if my family is the subject. Family is my top priority. The best thing about my tolerance is I have high threshold just spare my family.

Your discussion was sent to my email add and I like to respond also. Before, when I was younger, my tolerance is below far, meaning I am not tolerant. I want things to be done immediately no more or less. And when paying my fare and I was given change less than what is right I got furious and demand the amount. Simple things that was not given due consideration i got easily upset. But as I increase my age, I noticed I am increasing my tolerance. Even if I have to say no I still say yes, but still there are limitations/tolerance. I would say it was increased by 50%.

I think I'm pretty tolerant. I don't get any road rage, or get mad too easy. I am never in that much of a hurry going anywhere that people who drive like idiots, get me mad. My hubby on the other hand, he has sever road rage and can't stand people who drive like idiots. Same with my son. But my daughter is like me and never gets mad. I do have a problem with stupid people, though, I must admit. When some one does something absolutley dumb without thinking first. Or someone asks a really dumb question. I don't show my emotions when this happens I just think it in my head.

Hi, i do agree with you that people now a days are loosing their tolerance in everything, this is because people always expect something or the other from others, for example, mom expects something from her child, & when it is not done to hewr expectation she looses her tolerance, " ALWAYS EXPECTATION LEADS TO DISAPPOINTMENTS" boss expects the level of work from his but when it is not fulfilled to his expectation obviously it leeds to loosing his temper, i say that i am very tolerant in all the things i do, no matter what the situation is, i keep myself cool, coz, when we take things serious & lose our temper, we always land up in wrong judjement & also we will not have a proper solution in all the things we do or say, i am very happy with my mother in law, coz i tolerate with her in all the thigs she says or do, & now she is a friend of mine, & so am i, this makes all the other conflicts to be shared & take decission together, & also explain what i feel when things go wrong, & what was her view when i am wrong, see life is just only of two things, right & wrong, pass & fail, tolerate & intolerate, live & die, happy & sad, .............. so it keeps on going, so why take the wrong thing , live life to the fullest & also make others live with you happily,

we humans are proud. we want our own way. and we expect others to think like we do. the result is intolerance. we expect others to be like us and follow us at the same time we want to be unique. that is the irony of the human spirit.
