The sabre-toothed tiger was a fierce, carnivorous member of the cat family that lived during the Oligocene and Pleistocene Epochs. This vicious cat was about the size of a modern tiger and was named for the pair of long, curved, dagger-like canine teeth growing from its upper jaw. It used these fangs to stab its pry and tear up its flesh. This prehistoric cat had a jaw that would open very wide, and that enabled it to attack evn such massive animals as the mastodon.
