does anyone else out there have a problem with lazy students? Is it me, the parents or just the change in times that makes them that way? Share your comments!

I believe that some students are getting lazier as time goes by because of too many things that are grabbing their attention away from their studies. For instance, I see more and more high school and elementary students spending more time in computer shops playing online games than spending time for their studies.

I did my Masters work paper on Nutrition and Learning and dove into ADHD and found that 'ADHD' is not a disease and can't be treated with meds. I asked a couple doctors what can be doen about ADHD then...they each said 'proper parenting'. Are we really doing our children any justice by letting them slide?

I believe that technology plays an important role in creating "lazy students." Additionally, when you combine busy and lazy parents with technology, the problem becomes even greater. I am working on a degree in Child Psychology and it amazes me how much children can get away with these days. I myself, do not believe in ADHD, ADD or any other attention disorder, the fact that parents and teachers have these ideas as scape-goats, make it much easier for everyone to ignore the real problem of taking responsibility for our children's educational futures.

every one of us become a student in our life. I admit that I am lazy. I hate school. I hate books. I remmember that I fell asleep reading a chapter im my text book for an assignment. I hate reading and writing. Maybe sometimes the kids was really not interested in the subject or in school. maybe the kids want sports. Why dont you try to know what interest the children and put it into discussions.

Sounds like a great idea! Creating activities that allows the students to get involved instead of reading one chapter after another. You admit you are lazy. Is it a 'learning/school' lazy or a 'generally lazy' type things with you? Can you recall the time in your life when you begain to be that way?

I think it's a combination of a lot of things. Like other posters have said, other things are capturing the students' attention, however, other things were always there to capture their attention...there just wasn't as much stuff. There's always been sports, music, etc. When it comes to other things becoming a priority, this is where the parents should step in and set their child's priorities FOR THEM. A child is obviously not going to put school first, so it is up to the parent to make this happen. In reaction to students' lack of care about school, teachers have allowed standards to drop, which just makes all of this a vicious cycle. If parents don't expect more, it is hard for teachers to GET more, but if teachers don't expect more, parents don't feel the need to push their students if just being there is getting them a A.

This is a good subject. Times sure are a changing, in a major way. Lets face it, at large school is not interesting at all. It's a place you go to where a person at the front of what's called a classroom demands you learn from them regardless of whether you are interested in the subject, or the person teaching it. A lazy student is an unmotivated student. You can't treat all children exactly the same and what motivates one does not necessarily motivate another. Times are going to have to change because unless you've not noticed, kids are not going to take it for much longer. Some kids refuse to participate, are not interested and will not be bullied by a teacher to do something they innately don't want to do. Find out why. And surprisingly it won't be because of some acronym such as ADHD. It's more likely there is no connection being made between teacher and student. Would you want to have anything to do with something uninteresting, or with someone who does not speak directly to your own curiosity, your own sense of values, or a lack of feeling valued by your teacher? Also interesting to note is the poor diets of children in the western world. Lack of interest, boredom or laziness could be as a result of coming down from a sugar high. This creates fatigue mostly and could be mistaken for laziness. Fatigue and lethargy go together. There is now an epidemic among children caused by parents unfortunately. If you are a teacher you have your work cut out for you. I hope you are one of the pioneers who are taking practical steps to turn this problem around.

There are so many lazy students because they lack motivation from their teachers, parents and yes, from themselves. It is important that students value hardwork, patience and persistence. I agree that there are so many distractions that keep their focus away from their studies. Thus, it is important for us to guide them.

I think some kids have a great picture of what the prize is if you study and apply yourself. Some kids are hot and cold in this area. The majority seem to be in that category as you suggest, lazy and unmotivated. How do you get them out of this? It is hard. I think they have to in some way, shape,or form understand what the Prize could be if they apply themselves. I get my students all the time ask me, "Why do I have to know Math?" I tell them that they probably don't have to BUT they have to learn how to be responsible for doing work over a long period of time. They have to develop a reason for people to think they can be trustworthy and productive and that is what their grades will resemble. The light might not go on in a kid when he/she is spoken to of this but it could be a starting point in the possibility of them coming around.
