dying hair red

Me at a friend's wedding - Here's me a month ago after a darker brown dye treatment.

I've always been a brunette with red highlights. I'm 34 with a few gray hairs, so now I'm kinda looking to "reinvent" myself by dying my hair a more noticable red color. I don't want to look like Ronald McDonald though. Does anyone have any honest advise on whether or not to do this? Or what products I should use? I've used Loreal Feria...#51...but it just brought me back to ground zero...my original color w/out the grey. I used to do darker brown colors in college, but in hindsight those made me look paler and even pasty. So basically, any redhead hints?

the color on the box is just for looks. its never turned out that way for me. if it does make a baking soda paste with water and leave it in for 5 min for 3 days. thatll fix it

I've seen auburn on the boxes and some seem a little burgandy. Do you know if that's what color I'll end up with or does it depend on the brand? Thanks for responding.

My best friend is washing her hair with onion skin solution for reddish tone highlights. She boil onion skins for 20 minutes to get the color, cool it down and use it as the rinse. This is what I was told...

Thanks for the idea. Does this leave an onion smell in her hair?

i like that sort of color. i dyed mine before though it's cherry and i like it. go for it, i prefer it more than blonde. i have no problems with hair chemicals before so for you, i don't really know because it depends on your skin on how it will react. just make sure, the one who will do it is a professional.

My skin's been fine with the chemicals in the past...but do you know how long I should wait until I try another dye. I just did this color two days ago. Thanks for the response!
