Lesser of 2 (or 3 or 4...) Evils - or Not?

It seems like every election, especially Presidential elections, there are many people who speak of voting for the "lesser of two evils" or even of not voting because they feel that's what their choices would be. How do you feel about that in this particular election? If you are a member of one of the major parties, how do you feel about the contenders for your party's nomination and for all of you, partisans and independents alike, do you think the General Election is going to come down to that once again? I'll say this much - I feel we're going to get a real choice, not a case where both major candidates stand for much the same thing so I think it will come down to a matter of what you think are the most important issues facing our country and what you think should be done about them. As for my personal opinion I'll say this much - my opinion of what constitutes "evil" has been changed quite a bit from what it may have been eight years ago. I guess you don't know what it is until you've dealt with it! Annie

I felt that way in the last election. I hated Kerry with a passion, and while I didn't care much for Bush, I thought he was the lesser of the two evils (I'm still debating on whether I was right about that one though...) This year, there is one candidate I will vote for whether he wins the nomination or not..Ron Paul. I will write him in if I have to.

I know there were people who didn't like Kerry much - "hated with a passion" is a bit extreme, but I did see some genuine dislike - but I definitely didn't consider him the lesser of two evils! I actually believed and still do believe that he'd have made a good President. He's just a bit "charismatically challenged", which is sad that we choose the leader of the free world in that way. I have noticed that Ron Paul has a lot of heavy support, especially online. I agree with him on many issues but I'm a bit concerned he's too far to the right on social issues. But, I'm glad you're involved and plan on voting and won't think you're voting for someone "evil"! Annie

I think some people mistake his personal beliefs for something that he will implement in his presidency. Yes, he is personally against abortion and, as an Ob/Gyn, has never performed one, nor ever seen a situation in which having an abortion was something one must do to save a life. However, his stance on abortion is a personal one, and he feels that it is personal for every person in the US. Therefore he wants to allow the states to vote on this social issue, seeing as how whether it is legal or not will directly affect each and every woman in the US. A few years ago, a few states voted on whether gay marriage would be allowed in the state. Some states it passed, some it didn't...he wants abortion to be voted on in the same manner, rather than there be one law in the federal government that allows or bans in. This is his only reason to overturn Roe Vs Wade...so the power of deciding something like that is given back to the people of each state, not so a few people in the Supreme Court can decide what America really needs...especially on issues like abortion and gay marriage where people are seriously affected by the outcome of a decision of a few. He wants the same vote to be taken on gay marriage in each state.

I've often said this about the election. This is the first year that I am really following the election closely and my first year that I will be voting. I am praying hard that Obama doesn't get in b/c I think we can all move to another country...if we can find one...for all the good it's going to do to have him in office. I don't trust him at all and think he is up to no good. I don't like Hillary much b/c she seems to be too power hungry and willing to say anything that will get her back at the White House. McCain seems to be allright but he has some issues too. At this point if I had to vote I'd vote for him...he's the lesser of the 3 evils. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I'd say McCain has more than "some issues"! I'm afraid there would be no possible way I could vote for him for many reasons, not the least of which it would be a third Bush term and THAT would be evil...lol! Annie

Annie, I am so very excited about this election. I can't believe that I have lived long enough to see a woman, a black man, and a Mormon all running for President. How much we have grown! I know that we have a long way to go, but I feel more positive with this election year than I have felt for many years. My biggest fear is that the voters that come out to vote again will only be voting on the two issues that seemed to get voted on in the past two elections - Abortion and the dreaded Homosexual Marriages. I hope that we can get out the voters that are going to vote on American Issues such as the economy, ending the war, social security, homelessness, other social issues, and education. I also hope that we can see past the race and the gender of the candidates and vote on the ability of the canditates. I hope that young people take an interest and really listen to the issues. I hope. Blessed Be ~Donna
