refuge from the miseries of life

French physician and philosopher Albert Schweitzer said, "There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats." This holds a profound truth for me. And you?

I will too, Bella, always have a cat. In fact, I'll probably have the three I've got now for pretty much the rest of my life. Two of them are four now and I fully expect them to live till their 20, and my little one is two now, and a Manx. Manx cats don't even fully mature till their 5 years old, and live to be at LEAST 20. so, I'm gonna be awfully old by then, Bella.

I'm quite sure that Guiness feels the same way about you:) I have three, and they're the light of my life. The mere thought of them not being in my life makes me shudder!

that is quite interesting, and i've not heard of it before. i guess i would say that "there are two means of refuge from the cares of life: faith and friends". what do you think about that? it definitely holds true in my life. :)

I think it's beautiful. I also have great faith and great friends. I'm so glad I started this discussion. It's brought such wonderful responses, like this one. Thank you so much for adding your thoughts.

i would go with music, cats and laughter. nothing better than a good bellylaugh when you feel miserable!

Hey, who woulda thunk it, Schweitzer could have learned a thing or two from you! I agree, laughter ranks right up there with cats and music. Glad you chimed in, Exey.

This is because cats make you feel relaxed, sympathetic, calm and happy when you hold them just for a while... and almost nothing else can give you such comfort and peace; whilst in their presence one really feels she is having the best friend one can wish. I agree 100% with the quote about the cats. However, I'd place 'creativity' instead of music in the sentence. Btw, the word 'feel' is placed deliberately a few times in my answer - FEEL sympathy with me and the whole world, is what any cat says to you in her own language.:-)

Violina, you are truly a cat person! Takes one to know one! And yes, having a cat on my lap is the most natural feeling thing in the world to me and I find great contentment and peace with them there. It STILL amazes me how they can suddenly be there on your lap, but without you knowing when they got there - you just realize that they're there! Curled up, sleeping, purring. Violina, isn't music creativity? And doesn't creativity make it's own individual music? Personally, I find music in everything - in cats, their purring, their grooming, the infinitely graceful way they move, and curl themselves, their tails around you? Some say music is math and math is music. But math is the one thing I don't find music in! Can't see it! But really, that's only because I don't have a real understanding of math and because it's always scared me. But if the situation were different, I'll bet I'd be able to see the music there. Anyway, thanks so much for your response! I loved reading it and loved your use of the word 'feel'. I do feel that it was quite appropriate! Again thank you, I do hope to talk with you again.
